Sedona Uptown Construction Delays and Closures

Article submitted by the city of Sedona.

Sedona AZ – Traffic improvement construction work in two areas of Uptown will result in closures and likely traffic delays in the coming weeks. This work is part of the Sedona in Motion Uptown Roadway Improvements project.

Starting October 22 and lasting until approximately December 22, 2019, single lane traffic control will begin at the northern end of Uptown, north of Art Barn Lane, while crews construct a new roundabout. Two temporary stoplights will be installed, one near La Petite Sedona and the other near Therapy on the Rocks. These lights will alternate northbound and southbound traffic through one traffic lane. The location of the lane will change from the east side to west side of State Route 89A throughout construction of the roundabout.

The goal is to have the new northbound lane of the roundabout operational by Christmas. Work being done includes excavation, grading, curb and gutter work.

Demolition work is underway at the intersection of Apple Avenue and State Route 89A with Apple Avenue closed between Mountain View and SR 89A: This closure is expected to last until October 30, 2019. All vehicles on Mountain View may still turn right (west) onto Jordan Road.

Access to all businesses is being maintained throughout the entirety of the Uptown project, with heavy work scheduled to be completed in spring 2020.

You can’t have unlimited cars in a limited area. To pretend they will fix it, the City will continue to do do construction of bandaid fixes to say they are doing something.

It will go on until residents revolt.

The city is spending 30,000,000 that is something and will spend more because they have the fund in like most cities. They are doing their job to handle growth not trying to stop it. 10,000 + people lane there living from visitors and 70% + for city income comes from tourism related taxes.
Look you moved to Sedona knowing it sits on two state Hwy’s. Yes we have traffic and we will have more because people want to come to Sedona, for the same reason you did, living in Sedona does not give you the right to stop other from visiting. Get over it or move no name poster.

  4. @steve Segner says:

You fail to realize it was the RESIDENTS ……. NOT TOURISTS who unfortunately were duped into voting for and approving incorporation. It was promoted as being a solution to control growth and the exact opposite has occurred.

However there is still the option that RESIDENTS, if they are as fed up as indicated by most comments on Sedona Eye, could organize and revert to an unincorporated area. That will most likely not happen since too many people are selling and moving out to people who are using their property investments for SHORT TERM RENTALS!

See, Segner, a “higher power” besides you, the chamber, mayor, city council, and even Sedona residents does exist and there is NOTHING you can do to change that.

Never thought of writing this before but Praise the Lord for Gov. Ducey and his support for residential short term vacation rentals. Our mortgage will be free and clear in a very short time and pissing off you, city council, city staff, and the C of C is like icing on the cake.

Why doesn’t the city understand what Italy understands and cares about and that’s sustainability. There’s no straw problem but one created by a paper written by a California child and there’s no need for sanctuary cities when they are illegal and the city shows us how to disobey the law. I am not shopping in Sedona including its eateries or using the tourist venues in city because this is my and other friends protests. You want my money then you govern my way. I’ve taken the highway out of Sedona and love the savings and benefit to my beloved red rocks.

  6. Steve Segner says:

Geez you’re (Deleted by Editor) about something that happened and what 30 years ago and you really think people are going to unincorporate for what so people will stop coming.5 you’ve got a great government here and you guys live in the past. such a terrible place we’re home zgoing from 800,000 to 10,000,000 you guys should move the central Phoenix maybe you’d be happier there and the homes only go for three $400,000 no tourists

  7. Pave paradise, put up a parking lot says:

Those are the people in charge of Sedona now, those that would pave paradise.

The problem is, as the song says ” You don’t know what you’ve got till it’s gone.”

Sedona is being paved. Schools are losing students, homes all become vacation rentals.

    Then it’s gone !!

  8. Wm. & Lois F. says:

    Temper, temper @Steve Segner.

Guess what? Tourists discovered Sedona long before it incorporated (and, yes, we came as tourists at the recommendation of friends = “word of mouth” = many years ago before incorporation.)

C of C “destination marketing” was a poor excuse for millions of dollars of municipal funding and most likely a farce from the get-go. A complete waste of money. And they now intend to teach us about sustainability? Get real! As a result we are how asking for straws for our water at restaurants (never even thought about it before).

You shoot off your mouth (in written words) and make no sense and have not a clue most of the time with regards to your inane rants.

Sedona incorporated. We live with it and a good many of us realize it was a mistake. However and the flip side of the coin are the two horrible high-rise structures without consideration of set-backs on SR179 frontage in the VOC. Lesser of two evils? To incorporate or not to incorporate? It depends on who pulls the strings in each situation and we are sick of a Sedona City Council treating your Chamber of Commerce and Lodging Council with kid gloves.

You all deserve (in our opinion) to be sent to the corner and suck your thumbs until daylight reaches your brain.

However, the buck really stops with Sedona registered voters. They, ultimately, are responsible for allowing this to continue. Unfortunately they were naive and listened to the hype dished out even by the City Manager when he spoke at events prior to the last opportunity to vote on Home Rule. Sure he discussed both pros and cons. Enough to cover his tail legally. But the veiled threat about losing the library and humane society (as examples) if they didn’t approve Home Rule? BS and shame on him! Both existed and functioned just fine prior to incorporation.

Voters were swayed by deceit and approved the farce so why not pull up your big boy panties and jolly well show them some gratitude, Little Boy?

    Amen.

@Stevie Segner, We all know the game. Drive the locals out except the super wealthy. However you will never be another Aspen because you have low life taste. Cowpoke etiquette will not get it done. Anyone with taste will run for the hills. Go join a carnival, your services are sorely needed .

  10. John Daniels W Sedona says:

    @ @Steve Segner

So, you want to organize to revert incorporation? Oh yeah LOL I’ll sit back and watch that cluster happen. You and the 20 people who post won’t amount to much. LOLOLOL

Incorporation because ADOR required a wastewater treatment plant and because Sedona was split between two counties had to incorporate or be in violation.

It had nothing to do with it being a solution to control growth. You’re beginning to sound a lot like that guy at 1600 Pen Ave. If you tell enough lies maybe someone would believe you.

  11. No LImit Growth says:

To quote Segner,”Look you moved to Sedona knowing it sits on two state Hwy’s. Yes we have traffic and we will have more because people want to come to Sedona, for the same reason you did, living in Sedona does not give you the right to stop other from visiting. Get over it or move no name poster.”

So when we make a Sedona with high rise buildings and 10 lane double decker highways, well, you know Sedona was on two state highways when you moved here. You can’t stop growth.

Yea, if you want to preserve a town you can stop growth. If you want to destroy it’s character, you put no limits on growth. Unlimited growth worked out really well for California, bumper to bumper traffic, high taxes, homeless and power outages.

Move back to California Segner, it’s a third world s***hole, it’s already what you want Sedona to become.

  12. steve segner says:

    , No LImit Growth says:
if you want to preserve a town you can stop growth
No you can’t, zoning was put in place 30 years ago, and under Arizona state law no city can” take by changing zoning to a lesser use” with out paying the owner of the land. Land owners have the right to build on the land they own with the zoning that the land was given.
Sedona has commercially zoned property all along 89a and 179 protected by zoning and over 1000 home lots .
You knew that when you move to Sedona, or should have now you want to change the rules. Sorry, not going to happen. You want no growth some of us are working hard to grow Sedona…. all towns should grow.

  13. No LImit Growth says:

The problem isn’t existing zoning. Nor is it the community plan which once said “Preserving our small town character.”

Now it is increased density and less parking, but we can build a parking garage, and have mass transit as we all know, parking garages and mass transit are so small town.

Killing the goose that laid the golden egg. You reap what you sow. Karma awaits.

  14. Jim Poole says:

Flip it. YOU KNEW when you MOVED here STEVE Small city with the majority of the Sedona Area Communities being OUTSIDE the city limits. NO CITY Library or FIRE. Only Districts SO why do the IN-CITY PAY for your clubs enrichment?

Why doesn’t your regional chamber pay their own expenses?

Your full of spins, half truths and counterfeit statements. IMO but that is what story tellers and scam artists do.

The regional chamber and lodging council is the root cause of ALL sedona issues. The manipulative overpaid staff and half headed city council are your only reason for glory and money. A authentic person wouldn’t be taking enrichment. IMO

  15. @John Daniels says:

That was a lie then and it is still a lie (deleted by editor). Unfortunately the people bought it and narrowly voted to incorporate. That was a dark day for Sedona. The violation if any, would have been outside city limits. How do you live with yourself. Maybe you will be a (deleted by editor), but I doubt it. Organized crime only pays for so long. Your day is coming.

  16. steve Segner says:

You guys are so funny, you move to Sedona and live in a home built on open range land scraped from a hillside by a builder in the 1960ies. And 1970ies. And you complain about building now.
Sedona city was formed to borrow money to build a waste water system to stop home owners just like you from digging holes in the yard and polluting the ground and ground water with there sewage! You hate all progress that does not benefit you, to hell with people that want a thriving city with job and housing for all. You got your !

  17. steve Segner says:

John, Most of the development seen today was constructed in the 1980s and 1990s.

The first Anglo settler, John J. Thompson, moved to Oak Creek Canyon in 1876, an area well known for its peach and apple orchards. The early settlers were farmers and ranchers. In 1902, when the Sedona post office was established, there were 55 residents. In the mid-1950s, the first telephone directory listed 155 names. Some parts of the Sedona area were not electrified until the 1960s.

Sedona began to develop as a tourist destination, vacation-home and retirement center in the (1950s.) Most of the development seen today was constructed in the (1980s and 1990s). As of 2007, there are no large tracts of undeveloped land remaining.
So, 55 residents. In the mid-1950s and most building in the 1980 and you are up set the city is trying to fixing the mess that came before incorporation.
connection of streets,If Sedona was a tourist destination in the 1950 ies why would it not be in 2020? People came to Sedona to make a living and you came to sit on you >>> .
As for “Preserving our small town character.” it does not say Preserving our small town……. Just the (character.) We all know the town will grow and we are planning for it ,as for character that is in the eye of beholder the “city council.”

  18. Diana says:

Steve, with respect, you missed your own point by a mile. My family goes back a few generations around here, let me give you a bit of reference to use when discussing Sedona growth.

Sedona was never a tourist attraction in the 1950s. The people who came, went. There wasn’t enough water, good land not already taken, or great desire to live here. There was nothing to escape from elsewhere to seek an escape. Understand? The entire country was being resettled in the 1950s and 1960s and that had to do with WWII. It’s a huge country and lots of better places to settle to establish businesses and growth industries which most of Arizona wasn’t and still isn’t cut out for – most know it, surprised given your ties to real estate that you don’t. Sedona is a phenom of real estate developers like most of America today – and like in 2008 through 2014 it went belly up and caused great hardship and distress to those who began to live beyond their means and believe in the words of those preying upon them — the developers and zoning compliant receivors of its growth benefit.

When I begin to take my financial security advice from real estate promoters and benefactors, I’ll be broke in a couple decades. That’s what will happen again. Only this time, Sedona won’t recover until its torn down to reach a sustainable size. We’ll have roach motels and once big deals like famous places in LA, NY, and other places with better planners and more usable real estate. Give a wave to Kingman AZ and Havasu when you go by. Visit the Salton Sea in California. Visit Mono Lake in California. We will never be a Tahoe or an Aspen or even a Bisbee AZ. Believe it from a generational viewpoint.

  19. @steve Segner says:

Sorry your comments are counterfeit once again.

Why do you spew hate? Why can’t you accept that you and your sedona mafia club is ruining Sedona. Your club breeds hate, has phony information for your own enrichment IMO.

Over commercialization is killing the small town charm, driving tourists and residents elsewhere. All to pay your club and counterfeit lodging council bills IMO.

You’re in it for all the wrong reason$, You don’t even live in the city. What makes you think you are entitled to sedona city taxpayers subsidies?

    Please stop destroying sedona.

  20. Alan J. says:

It seems the majority of those commenting here don’t get it. Why blame Steve Segner for decisions made at Sedona City Hall? The city council are the ones activating and allowing this regional chamber of commerce to control Sedona.

Therefore and simply stated: The buck stops with the Sedona City Council!!! Don’t like the direction Sedona is headed? Then vote them OUT!

Didn’t happen last election because the majority of Sedona voters acquiesced to the veiled threat of loss of funding to their favorite non-profits (the real ones and not the C of C). So shame on all of you.

  21. steve Segner says:

You say, Sorry your comments are counterfeit once again.
    Why do you spew hate.
Really , my post are on the facts ,please show us what I said that is not true and Hate filled?

“Didn’t happen last election because the majority of Sedona voters acquiesced to the veiled threat of loss of funding to their favorite non-profits (the real ones and not the C of C). ”

Of course, that is your opinion, you’re ASSUMING that the voters acquiesced remember what they say about ASSUMING anything.

The same way that I’M ASSUMING that the voters saw right through the tea party mentality of the losers and voted from the heart.

To be transparent, I’m a business owner, I’m a resident and I’m a voter and I am 180 degrees from your BS.

  24. @ Fake John Daniels says:

So you’re a hater? You like calling people with different opinions that you don’t like rude and haters? What if we just hate your stupidity? What if we just hate a small group ruining Sedona as a good place to live and our home?

What if we refuse to believe segner lives in his hotel at 95 Portal Ln when he owns an estate in the canyon outside city limits?

What if we just hate your lies?

Well, not really hate, we just think they are funny you need to repeat them so much. Like an abusive cheating spouse.

  25. steve Segner says:

What if we just hate your stupidity ?

I just asked 10 simple questions and you did nor answer any of Them?
just more of lets attack steve, that is ok …
so now let’s try one more time

    1. Should people that own property be allowed to build to the zoning laws? set 30 years ago by first city council Yes or No How would you do it?

    2. State law let the city council handle all bed and sales tax as they see fit. Yes or no

    3. The Sedona Lodging council get no money from the city or chamber , Fact, or show proof.

    4. The state of Arizona not the city council allowed over 2000Air B@B’s fact,

    5. Sedona sits on two major state HWy”s hence traffic.

    6. Maricopa county is 100 miles south Maricopa County was the nation’s fastest-growing county for the third consecutive year in 2018 fact. and they will visit Sedona on weekends.

    8. You say Im in it for all the wrong reason$,

Oh I have built three home in Sedona , a hotel, serve on city commission and local charities…. Give to schools and back people running for office …….. Shame on me. and you do? please list all the good you have done for Sedona and your real name .

    9. Sedona has over 2000 un built lots fact and miles of open lots on 89A and 179.

10 Pink jeep opened in 1960 to cater to tourism fact

Please tell us line by line what is hate full or not true,

This is actually easy because they are facts: not as you like to say fake news,

“Preserving our small town character.” it does not say Preserving our small town

    Thanks Steve real name

@ @Steve Segner how rude you are. You sound like one of those tea party people who lost by a landslide to get your own people into office
@ @Steve thanks for your comment but you will see I have no agenda just asking.
    simple questions

  26. steve Segner Lies says:

    1) People that own property should be able to build by the original zoning laws. They should not be granted variances in density just because they promise to build employee housing, which they never do.

    2) False about state law, but it is too long to explain here. You pretend the many explanations posted in the past never happened.

3)The Sedona Chamber gets millions from the City, and is affiliated with the Lodging council

4)You are saying almost half the housing units in Sedona are now Air B&B’s , Bull

    7) My home was built by the previous owner. NOT A DEVELOPER

8)You do not live in your hotel on El Portal LN? Just because you say it does not make it a fact. Why do you not live in your “Estate” in the canyon? Maybe on weekends when the traffic is too bad to even get a few miles up the canyon?

    9) The miles of “open lots” is forest service land, which you would have developed and turn the Verdey Valley into Phoenix sprall.

If you destroy the small town, you destroy the character. Do you want to put 4 lanes up the canyon? It’s a state highway after all? How about 6 lanes? How about we pave right up to the doorstep of your canyon estate after we pave over Oak Creek.

You’re not just asking simple questions, you are repeating lies over and over.

IMO The city managers directed and gave the special interests favoritism. The chamber and lodging council perks, extras and FREE directions on how they could CONTROL the city. IMO The city managers played favors. Threw their own under the bus.

Go watch it and Stevo states “trust me” Cit council just votes in the direction of staff and special interests aka sedona lodging and sedona regional chamber. fast and easy money money IMO

  29. MaryC says:

Steve, almost everything you and whoever is writing as John Daniels say is false.

  30. The deceased Town of Sedona says:

It used to be a community and a beautiful quaint western town.

Then the residents were tricked into voting to become a city.

Those in charge quickly figured they could legally take from the city funds.

    Poor Sedona, killed by greed.

A constant tale in the Old West.

  31. Say What Segner? says:

You are hysterical. Stomp your feet, post on the eye. “I just asked 10 simple questions and you did nor answer any of Them?”

Come on segner, when did you get appointment to police- president? When did a law get imposed that we the people need to answer to YOU??????

So funny, stomp some more. yell at those that post on the eye.

YOU are responsible IMO I’ve watched the meetings. I’ve seen you in action. Little ole man……. You know better and dictate to all.
Sedona has lost its small town charm and you have dictated and driven sedona into the mess that it is in. Don’t like it? Too bad! You were the one that told city council that is the way cities do it, trust me. Well they did the dummies. IMO

Come on stevo stomp more. hehe

you just asked 10 questions and for subsides to hotel club mafia aka Sedona Chamber. sick man IMO

Just because the ole half there city council and staff have given you an unfair advantage, subsidies in the millions and allow you to dictate their every more doesn’t make it part of SEDONA ordinance 2013-07 and give up the rights for anyone around sedona. What the beep? Why do you feel like we have to answer YOU little ole man stevo
    IMO

  35. Steve says:

In 1988 Sedona citizens voted to incorporate, yes 1988, 30 years later you are still upset.
The Majority of people in Sedona love Sedona and understand that it will grow . 30 years ago growth was set on place with the zoning put, by the city council And citizen advisory committee.
Here you are 30 years later bemoaning the loss and ranting and about Sedona sewer service system and it’s growth This is 2019 learn to live in it not 1988.
