Sedona Heritage Museum Welcomes Arizona Governor

Don Shields

Sedona AZ – The Sedona Heritage Museum presents “A Conversation with Governor Hunt” performed by Don Shields at 2:00 PM on Saturday, March 3, 2012. This is one of a series of events at the Sedona museum in celebration of Arizona’s Centennial year.

Enjoy this special re-enactment of Arizona’s first governor George W.P. Hunt from 1912. Don Shields bears a striking likeness to the first governor and his voice and mannerisms are reminiscent of Hunt. Utilizing extensive research (including interviews with Hunt family members), Shields presents stories of those first few years, the struggle to statehood, and the growth of the Baby State. After the show, Shields and the audience will engage in a dialogue.

Don Shields has thirty-four years experience teaching English, drama, and speech. Shields background served him well during the research and preparation for his forty-five minute performance as Governor Hunt.

Shields shared the stage with Arizona government dignitaries and spoke at the AZ Best Fest in Prescott last September. Marshall Trimble, the Arizona State Historian wrote, “Don, I declare you are the reincarnation of ol’ George W.P.  Keep up the good work.” The show is appropriate for all ages and is free.

The Sedona Heritage Museum is located at 735 Jordan Road, Jordan Historical Park in uptown Sedona. The museum if open daily from 11:00 AM to 3:00 PM and its Gift Shop specializes in Arizona Centennial items, gifts made by local artists and craftspeople, and movies made in Sedona. For more information about this Centennial presentation or the Sedona Heritage Museum, call 928-282-7038.

America’s pivotal presidential campaign of 1912 had significant impact on Arizona statehood. Hear the back stories and how the repercussions are still impacting politics and ‘home rule’ decisions right here in Sedona to this day. Lecture wil be Thursday, March 1, 2012 at 10:45 AM at the Sedona Heritage Museum, 735 Jordan Road in Jordan Historical Park, Uptown Sedona.

Charlie Schudson, a member of the Historic Preservation Commission, has been collecting memorabilia and studying presidential campaigns for fifty years. He is pleased to share his collection and knowledge of the 1912 campaign during this presentation. Judge Schudson states “1912 – Wow, what a year! But what’s the connection? What does Arizona statehood have to do with the presidential campaigns of William Howard Taft, Teddy Roosevelt, Woodrow Wilson and Eugene V. Debs? And how could their combat one hundred years ago have anything to do with American politics today?”

After Schudson’s talk, attendees will have an opportunity to see actual artifacts of the 1912 campaign and to ask questions. This free event in celebration of Arizona’s centennial year is presented by the ‘American Presidents’ class from OLLI (Osher Life Long Learning Institute of Sedona), the City of Sedona, and the Sedona Heritage Museum and is open to the public from 11 AM until 3 PM daily.
