Four Mayer High School students arrested for marijuana processing operation on school grounds

Sedona AZ (October 18, 2013)On October 15, 2013, a Yavapai County Sheriff’s Office School Resource Officer (SRO) arrested three juveniles, ages 14,15, and 16, for Possession of Marijuana, Possession of Marijuana in a School Zone, and Possession of Drug Paraphernalia. The SRO is assigned exclusively to Mayer High School in Spring Valley, Arizona.

On the morning of October 15, 2013, the SRO received information that marijuana was being transported on a school bus while hidden inside a musical instrument case. Students associated with the report were seen getting off the bus at Mayer High School, then walking towards the back of the school and out of view. Within the hour, the SRO learned that three students, identified by name, were drying out marijuana plants under a bridge near the school at Spring Lane and Gold Pan.

After confirming the three named students were absent from assigned classes, the SRO immediately drove to the Spring Lane bridge and found them in the process of drying out several recently harvested marijuana plant buds on top of school folders. The deputy arrested all three students and booked them into the Prescott Juvenile Detention Center.

Based on information developed after the arrest, a 17-year-old student was arrested the following day and charged with the same violations. YCSO learned the 17-year-old had supplied marijuana plants to the arrested students, agreeing to pay them to dry the plants for later sales.

The Mayer High School SRO is the only position of its type in Yavapai County. This deputy is specially selected for the assignment which involves full time work within the school. As a result, the SRO benefits from an ongoing relationship with students and staff and is able to use this affiliation to impact issues affecting school safety and security.

Citizens can contact the Yavapai County Sheriff’s Office with information or questions at 928-771-3260.
