Support for the Independent Senior

Kim Johanson, contributing writer sedonaeye.com Senior Issues and Health Care

Two of the most important issues for seniors are to remain independent, and continue living in their own home. However, health and cognitive issues can sometimes make normal day-to-day living a bit more challenging.

While some seniors accept assistance with no problem, many others initially can be resistant to the thought of someone helping them, particularly if the assistance is provided by a non-family member.

In many cases though, assistance is necessary in order to maintain the safety and well-being of the senior, and the peace of mind of the family.
Despite an obvious need for assistance, sometimes the urge to remain independent is strong.

According to a survey by Home Instead Senior Care, only one-quarter of seniors actually ask for help directly, so encountering resistance from the other 75 percent is very normal at first.

If you’re wondering if you might be overreacting or if your loved one’s situation truly calls for a need for additional care, the following list includes the top 10 situations that may lead to a senior needing some assistance.

• Advanced age
• Injury, illness or medical condition
• Being overwhelmed by simple, everyday tasks
• Asking for help directly
• Loss of a spouse or partner
• Move or relocation
• Inability to maintain home or care for self
• Loss of interest in favorite activities
• Loss of appetite
• Change in hygiene habits and/or deteriorating appearance

If a senior loved one falls into one or more of these categories, approach them gently about getting outside support. If you are met with resistance, contact a physician, social worker, or an agency specializing in senior care. Some situations are more difficult than others, and reaching out for assistance can make a senior’s life safer and easier, and lessen family member stress.

Kim, you bring up a lot of good points in this post, especially the tendency for seniors to resist help. As you implied, this can be another threat to independence. Your list of situations to look for is very helpful, and I think it will be useful to a lot of people.
