Sedona Receives State Planning Awards

This article submitted by the City of Sedona.

Sedona AZ (December 6, 2010) – On November 4, 2010, at the Annual State Planning Conference in Phoenix, the City of Sedona was recognized with two state planning awards.  Sedona was the only city in the State to receive two awards and both awards were for Sedona’s affordable housing efforts.  Each year, the Arizona Planning Association recognizes outstanding achievements and best practices of communities around the state.

The first award Sedona received was in the category of Best Public Education/Public Participation Program for the City’s Accessory Dwelling Unit ordinance.  The award committee was impressed with Sedona’s extensive public participation process particularly because it turned a controversial issue with little initial support into one that ultimately gained the community support necessary for City Council to adopt the ordinance. Further, they stated that the use of flyers with real life stories made the need for affordable housing and the ordinance real to residents. One award committee member indicated that he was going to use Sedona’s Accessory Dwelling Unit ordinance in his community.

The second award was in the category of Best Ordinance and Regulation for the City’s voluntary incentives housing policy. The award committee acknowledged that this outstanding policy was innovative and admired the City of Sedona for addressing the affordable housing challenge head-on. The award committee felt that the document was well written and liked that the City took an extra step in creating this policy by providing housing incentives. The committee also liked the fact that Sedona didn’t use density as an incentive for the program.
