Sedona Park Ranger Program Bob Huggins receives Volunteer of the Year Award

Sedona Park Ranger Program Manager Bob Huggins receives Volunteer of the Year Award from Arizona Parks and Recreation Association

Sedona AZ (August 9, 2013)Congratulations to Sedona Park Rangers Program Manager Bob Huggins for being recognized as the Volunteer of the Year for the State of Arizona through the Parks and Recreation Association. Huggins, noting the need to expand the park ranger program, asks that members of the Sedona community consider joining him and other dedicated volunteers with the city Park Ranger program.

The Park Ranger program is managed by the City of Sedona Department of Parks and Recreation. Ranger volunteers provide park patrols checking buildings, assisting park users, and acting as a uniformed deterrent to inappropriate activity in the parks. Rangers also assist at Park and Recreation sponsored events and occasionally perform light trail and maintenance work in Sedona’s parks.

Rangers act as “city ambassadors” while roving uptown and offering assistance to visitors and residents. This involves talking to visitors and merchants in the Main Street District, providing accurate visitor information, dealing with complaints and concerns, and responding to emergencies.

The park rangers also assist at community events. They provide parking and traffic control and assisting event planners and participants. Rangers are also available to assist police and fire personnel during times of emergencies.

The rangers, in their familiar green and tan uniforms with western hat, work year around. Since the program began in 2007, rangers have contributed nearly 14,000 hours of community service.

According to program manager Bob Huggins, “We would love to expand our community outreach to include regularly scheduled guided hikes, a junior ranger program and summer activities for our youth.” Currently there are eleven rangers, several of whom have been with the program since it started. Huggins would like to expand that number to fifteen. “If we were at full capacity, we could increase our visitor service coverage in the Main Street district while offering a wider variety of educational and interpretive services to Sedona residents,” Huggins said.

According to City Parks and Recreation Manager Rachel Murdoch, “The park rangers play an important role in our community and our parks and recreation programs. We fully support their efforts to increase educational and recreational opportunities for our residents, something that we can’t currently do on our own with our limited staff.”

Potential volunteer rangers are required to be fingerprinted, pass a background check and provide a minimum number of hours. Uniforms and training are provided at no cost to the volunteer.

For more information about the program, pick up an information packet at the Department of Parks and Recreation office at Sedona City Hall, 102 Roadrunner Drive, Sedona.

  4. I never saw this anywhere but here. Bob Huggins you do deserve this and it’s a shame you didn’t get a gold watch for all the money saved by the city for this program.
