Harley McGuire, SedonaEye.com star pet columnist goes to the park and meets Maya

Sedona AZ (August 15, 2013) – It seemed like forever since Mom took me to my favorite park in the whole world. Well, on Thursday the 8th day of August in 2013 it finally happened!

We hadn’t been there in a long, long time because it was too windy, too hot, too cold, too snowy, too rainy, too whatever! But finally she brushed me up, cleaned my face and ears, and I knew then it was finally a car ride not to the vet, Terrie the groomer, or some other dreaded displeasure.

It was mid afternoon when we arrived at the Kiwanis VOC Park and lots of kids were running and playing. It was still pretty sunny but Mom parked way at the end so we wouldn’t interfere with the kiddy fun. However, that of course is where I wanted to go and, naturally, I had my way.

Well, this little blond girl properly asked Mom if she could pet me and Mom said yes she could, but warned her about my disengaged jaw.

As it happened a long time ago, this same little girl had petted me several other times. She didn’t remember my name but she remembered me and Ma Kettle (a secret name that I’m not s’posed to know nuthin’ bout). Of course we forgot her name but she reminded us it was Maya (Mya?).

She wanted to take my leash but MK only allowed it as long as she held the long end. And so we went on our way all over the park until I did my “duty” which, of course, Ma K. cleaned up. Then Maya asked permission if she could call me PoPo which MK said OK but maybe I wouldn’t readily respond.

And so, of course, I realized that under every tree there is some shade which is where I led the way so we could all plop down and chat.

School had just started and so Maya told us she was in the first grade. Ma K. said so you will learn to read and stuff, but Maya said she had been to some other school and learned a lot about that and so she was a bit “advanced.” Ma K. noticed a couple of front teeth missing and Maya was quick to note she had new ones growing.

Maya wanted to know why my ears were so short. Ma K. explained that they sometimes get snarled. Maya asked Ma Kettle, “You mean like yours?” (It was pretty windy.)

She was very cute and I liked her a lot. In fact, I even snuggled up to her which I don’t readily do with small two-legged critters. Guess one reason is because she had a bug of a sort land on her and she sweetly blew it away and said she had made a wish. Then she caringly watched a lizard climb a tree, after which she said, “I love dogs, cats, all animals, and reptiles,” then added, “I think I like them better than people.”

That being said, we were then all linked together till the end of time cuz Ma Kettle and I couldn’t have agreed more. After that we lazed in the shade of tree after tree, all six(?) of them, until her daddy called to her and said it was time for them to leave.

And so Maya this is for you – ‘cuz at the tender age of six, or maybe seven (good grief…I AM probably twelve!), you’ve learned a lesson that some people never learn in a lifetime of a zillion years past your beloved seven.

Please, never change.

Oh, it was the best day for sure and Maya is my best wee person friend in the whole entire world!

Hey Harley McGuire. It’s GREAT that Sedona Eye has something more to relate than negative misinformation (according to a comment made by a man named Peter Fagan @ the Sedona City Council meeting yesterday afternoon/evening) :-)

  3. Sounds like you had a pretty “cool” day at the park. The fun part of your article was that we learned about the other name….Ma Kettle. Not everyone knows about “Ma & Pa Kettle” and the movies they made. Luv ya’, Nik, Mo & Fab

Sounds like you really met a nice pal in Maya. I think kids are cool and let’s face it they are small like we are and low to the ground. Maybe they are “grounded” and we can relate to them better than some big people. I like that park too. Maybe I’ll see you the next time I’m over there.
    Happy tails.

    Tee Hee Hee!

“Ma & Pa Kettle” not the best kept secret I ‘spose except what became of Pa? Ho, Ho, Ho! Only “The Shadow” knows.

    Lovingly,

Glad you finally got to go to the park and hang out under each shade tree and connect with your young lady friend. I’m sure you’ll want to go back and see her again soon. Love and best wishes to you and your Mom from KY.
