School Board Approves $3 Million New Office

Dear sedonaeye.com: submitted by Zachary Richardson, Sedona AZ   We elected five school board members to ensure our school district operates in the best interest for our students and community. Unfortunately two of the five school board members recuse themselves continuously from board discussions concerning school bond issues due to possible “conflicts of interest” situations because the companies to which they are related have construction contracts with the school district for the school bond project.  I have questioned the board if proper representation of our interests is possible if major decisions are continually made without the full input from our elected board members. I have not received a conclusive answer. Though such a situation could be legal, it does not appear that we are receiving proper representation from our school board as our school district is spending tens of millions of dollars of our community school bond funding.  In August, the school district office building on Brewer Road is being demolished to make way for a new $3 million building.  One must question if such an elaborate new district office building is what is actually required for our district and community at this time or in the future if companies related to two board members have contracts for this building and have recused themselves for board discussions.  Other construction options should be openly discussed before the demolition occurs in August.

And yet, our Sedona Fire District could not get its Board to approve to spend the $2.8 million that SFD had saved to build the much-needed Chapel area fire station… Pitiful.

    Alice,

That’s what is puzzling me as well. As one of the retired citizen in the District, I will never have use of the $ 3 million new school district office, but my wife and I could seriously benefit from the Chapel area fire station. Why are we letting a small narrow-minded, biased, hateful vocal minority dictate what’s best for the rest of us? How long can we allow for that to continue? Isn’t it about time that we, the up to now silent majority, make our fellings known? We have already had two years of no accomplishments in the District from the two people elected in 2008, do we want four more of the same nonsense?

When we go the polls on November 2nd, we must change that!
