Sedona AZ (January 8, 2016) – The Arizona Coconino County Sheriff’s Office would like to advise residents who own seasonal homes in rural unincorporated neighborhoods in the high country of Coconino County to know the existing conditions in those neighborhoods before traveling there. Some neighborhoods are experiencing power outages, damaged utilities, damaged structures and dirt roads that have a substantial snow pack having not yet been plowed. If your seasonal home is located in a neighborhood where there are full time residents, it is wise to contact one of them to obtain the most current and accurate information as possible.

As with any winter travel there are some simple tips that will make your travel safer.

1. Know the existing conditions at your destination.

2. Have an accurate map of your intended travel route.

3. Let a friend know when you’re leaving, where you are going, and when you plan to return. Leave emergency contact numbers and instructions. Have a cell phone charger and keep phone fully charged.

4. Have extra blankets and warm clothing/shoes or boots in your vehicle.

5. Have a flashlight with extra pack of batteries.

6. Nonperishable food items with enough for all of the occupants of your vehicle for several days.

7. Collapsible snow shovel and emergency signal flares or triangles.

8. First Aid Kit and travel with a week’s worth of all required prescription medication.

9. Weather Radio and solar charger.

10. Plenty of drinking water, matches/disposable lighter.

11. Keep your vehicle gas tank as full as possible.

12. Be prepared for a stay in your vehicle that may last several days.

By following these simple steps we believe your trip will be safer and more enjoyable.
