Wayde Chaulklin charged with murder of Black Canyon City woman

Sedona AZ (January 13, 2016) – Yavapai County Sheriff’s Office detectives booked 47-year-old Wayde Chaulklin into the Camp Verde Detention Center for one count of murder in the second degree. The victim has been identified as Janine Appleford, 42, the suspect’s girlfriend. The incident occurred in a home in the 34000 block of Mud Springs Road, Black Canyon City, Arizona.

Chaulklin claimed he accidentally shot Appleford during the early morning hours of January 12, 2016, when part of a rifle he was carrying hit the corner of a table and ‘went off.’ He saw Appleford fall to the floor and covered her with a blanket while never making any effort to contact medical personnel. After daybreak, he mentioned the incident to a neighbor and they contacted YCSO.

Deputies were dispatched to the location around 12:30 p.m. that same day and it was apparent Appleford had been dead for some time. As the investigation continued, Chaulklin changed his story, but still claimed the shooting was accidental. Detectives have not released further details regarding their relationship.

The rifle involved in the incident was recovered from the scene. Chaulklin was in possession of methamphetamine when arrested. Bond has not been set as of this writing.

Citizens can contact the Yavapai County Sheriff’s Office with information or questions at 928-771-3260 or the YCSO website at www.ycsoaz.gov.
