Phoenix AZ (June 21, 2012)Arizona Attorney General Tom Horne released the following statement when advised of the United States Department of Justice decision to pursue legal action with the State to address law enforcement issues in its Colorado City, Arizona desert town: The Complaint cites Fair Housing and First Amendment violations by Colorado City authorities.

“Finding a solution to the illegal activities that have been occurring in Colorado City (AZ) for decades has been one of my highest priorities since taking office as Arizona’s Attorney General. I proposed legislation last year that would have eliminated the ability of the Fundamentalist Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints (FLDS) to control and direct law enforcement officers employed by the Colorado City Marshal’s office. Sadly, our legislature chose not to pass our Bill.

I remain committed to stopping the illegal conduct perpetrated by the FLDS church on non-church members. I will continue to use the resources of my office to ensure that all residents of Arizona are treated fairly and equally under the law.

Two weeks ago, the Attorney General’s office announced that it will provide $420,000 to the Mohave County Sheriff office for overtime pay so that its officers could patrol Colorado City 16 hours per day. The hours will be staggered. The presence of the Sheriff’s Office will help prevent wrongdoers from infringing on the rights of innocent citizens of Colorado City .

I am very pleased that the U.S. Department of Justice has taken legal action to join us in this fight. I have offered the support of my office in pursuing this case and look forward to justice being served.”

  1. L.D. says:

I hope that as part of your investigation, you intend to investigate animal abuse.

The article just published on July 10th about this organization suspected of being responsible for burying a live kitten in cement, eventually dying days later after Mr. Wyler freed it, is the most disturbing thing I have seen to date.

I don’t consider myself a violent person and I am a female. But after seeing this, I have to honestly say if I knew who did this to this poor animal, I believe I would literally kill them with my own hands.

It is unacceptable that Colorado City, AZ law enforcement did nothing to investigate this cruelty, but someone MUST. It sounds like an on-going issue that this group is suspected of being responsible for constant dead cats being used to scare those who oppose their ways.

This means to me that they are abusing and killing these animals in a very cruel manner and it MUST be stopped. What are you going to do about it? Thank you.
