Sedona AZ – The Yavapai County Attorney’s Office prosecutes crime throughout Yavapai County, protects the rights of victims and provides legal representation and advice to all county departments. Its offices are in Prescott and the Verde Valley.

Criminal Division:  Responsible for prosecuting all felonies, all misdemeanors that occur in the unincorporated areas and all crimes committed by juveniles. The Office receives referrals from the 14 local law enforcement agencies throughout the county (plus DPS and other state and federal agencies) that conduct criminal investigations and refer the cases to this Office for prosecution.

The Office assists police agencies through the use of our on-call prosecutors as well as criminal investigators within the Office. Criminal prosecution includes providing legal advice during investigations, case review and charging, grand jury presentations, reviewing and disclosing police reports, discovery compliance, conducting pretrial interviews and hearings, trial preparation and other litigation activities.

Civil Division:  Provides legal representation and advice to most county officials and departments. The County Attorney defends lawsuits filed against the county and its employees, litigates property tax assessment and classification appeals, bankruptcy and condemnation actions on behalf of the county, asset and bond forfeiture litigation, files and litigates zoning enforcement actions, handles public records litigation, represents the State in mental health and sexually violent persons commitment proceedings, performs uncontested adoptions and files guardianships and conservatorships on behalf of the Public Fiduciary.

Bad Check Program:  Assists merchants and citizens in collecting the amount due from bad checks as well as restitution.

Victim Services DivisionVictim Services has been providing victim assistance and victim compensation services to crime victims since 1990. They recognize the needs of crime victims and the preservation of victim rights in the legal system.

Services offered include: short-term counseling, crisis intervention, referrals to local social service agencies and shelters, court-related services and educating crime victims on their constitutional and statutory rights in the criminal justice system. The program currently has 13 full-time staff and 11 trained interns and volunteers who provide services to victims of crime.

Victim Advocates are available to assist all victims of crime and have expertise in working with all victims of crime, including violent crimes.

Administration Division:  Provides leadership, direction and support to the divisions within the Office. Primary responsibilities are strategic planning, establishing policy and procedures, budgeting, finance, procurement, personnel and facilities management, manage and report on the various federal and state criminal justice grants allocated to the Office, assist in the preparation of grant/contract budgets/applications, preparing financial, administrative and ad hoc reports for submission to funding agencies, monitor grant accounting activity for accuracy and compliance, communications with media outlets, provide statistical and quarterly reports to other state agencies, and attaining and retaining records, documentation, hearing information, and others on all cases processed within the Attorney’s Office.
