Sedona AZ (April 22, 2011) – On May 1, 2011, the annual Sedona Holocaust Memorial ceremony will begin at 1:00 p.m. at the Jewish Community of Sedona and the Verde Valley synagogue located off State Highway 179 (south of the Chapel Road roundabout) at 100 Meadowlark Drive, Sedona, Arizona.

The Memorial ceremony is sponsored by the Jewish Community of Sedona and the Verde Valley and co-sponsored by the Heichal Baoranim congregation in Flagstaff, and the Martin-Springer Institute of Northern Arizona University.

Rabbi Alicia Magal of JCSVV and Rabbi Nina Perlmutter of Heichal Baoranim will lead the ceremony in lighting six candles that represent the 6,000,000 Jews murdered in the Holocaust and millions of others swept up in the horrors of World War II.

Doris Martin and Nika Fleissig, two Holocaust survivors will be honored attendees. A scene from a play about Doris Martin’s life will be presented in music and dance by students from Coconino Community College, Flagstaff. 

Rabbi Magal will read from her recently published book about Holocaust survivor Nika FleissigFrom Miracle to Miracle: A Story of Survival.” Nika Fleissig is Rabbi Magal’s mother.

The program is free to the public and refreshments will be served. In the lobby of the synagogue, a sculpture by JCSVV member Skip Fox will be displayed, created in cast metal from symbolic elements evoking the Holocaust.
