Sedona Art in the Roundabouts Finalists Named

City of Sedona Finalists for Public Art Competition For State Route 179 Roundabouts at the “Y” and Brewer Road

Recently the City of Sedona Art in Public Places Committee approved three finalists for the public art competition for the State Route 179 roundabouts at the “Y” and Brewer Road.  Out of the twenty proposals received in the Call to Artists, the following Sedona artists were chosen:

1. Kim Kori and Ken Rowe (back row, L & R) w/Tom Lever, Kori/Rowe Team (front row, left)

2. Reagan Word (front row, right)

3. Joseph Schibler (front row, center) and Michael Bower (back row, center)

The finalists’ proposals were reviewed by the Arizona Department of Transportation for any possible safety concerns as part of the approval process.

Finalists are creating maquettes (small models) that the public will have the opportunity to view and provide their opinion, which the Art in Public Places Committee will consider in their final selection.  Presently this public viewing is scheduled as a Community Listening Session on Wednesday, September 15 from 4 to 6 p.m. in the Council Chambers.  The Committee will then hold another meeting, date to be determined, to select the final artist for the competition.  Their recommendation will be forwarded to the Arts & Culture Commission for their approval and then to City Council for award of contract.

As part of the Call to Artists, each artist was asked to submit a project budget for up to $100,000. The budgets of the three finalists chosen range from $74,000 to $90,000.

City funding for this project comes from the Art in Public Places Fund.  This fund is not a General Reserve Fund, but is considered a capital fund.  All municipal construction projects of the City except WW facilities construction projects, allocate 1% of their total construction cost (whether new construction or renovation) to this fund.  Currently it has approximately $120,000. In addition, the Sedona Women have pledged $10,000 for the art in roundabout project.
