Coconino County Arizona Judge R. Mark Moran reappointed to second term

Sedona AZ (February 21, 2014) – The Arizona Supreme Court has appointed the Honorable R. Mark Moran to a new three-year term as Presiding Judge in Coconino County.

Presiding Judge Moran handles approximately one fourth of all criminal and civil cases for Coconino County, with the exception of domestic relations cases. In elections-related matters, Judge Moran serves as the elections judge.

Presiding Judges in Arizona take on extra duties and serve as the chief executive officer of the county courts, overseeing all aspects of court business. The Presiding Judge oversees case assignments and the court calendar, and monitors performance of the courts to ensure that cases are processed in a timely manner.

“I am honored to be reappointed to a second term as Presiding Judge,” said Moran. “I will continue to work with our staff, judges and the Clerk of the Court to ensure that all of the residents of Coconino County have timely and fair access to the courts.”

Moran became a Superior Court Judge in Coconino County in 2005 and became Presiding Judge in 2010. He is a graduate of Arizona State University and the New Hampshire School of Law, beginning his legal career as an Assistant City Attorney for the City of Phoenix before entering private practice. Judge Moran served as City of Flagstaff Magistrate from 1995 to 2002 when he was selected to serve as a Judge Pro Tem for the Superior Court in Coconino County.

From 2002 to 2011, Judge Moran served as the DUI/Drug Court Judge for Coconino County. DUI and Drug Courts caseloads are arranged as ‘problem solving courts,’ intended to help correct issues behind civil or criminal violations.

Moran serves on a number of important justice-related committees. He is on the statewide Case Processing Standards Committee, the Judicial Ethics Advisory Committee and a committee that is reviewing the current fee-waiver procedures around the state. He previously served as member (1998 to 2007) and chairman (2000 to 2001) on the Committee on the Impact of Domestic Violence and the Courts.
