Rashon Buchanan arrested on drug charges

Sedona AZ (July 25, 2013) – On July 20, 2013, a Yavapai County Sheriff’s Office patrol deputy stopped a red passenger sedan for speeding on north Arizona I-17 in the area of Highway 179. An investigation resulted in the arrest of 28-year-old Rashon Buchanan, 29-year-old Allen Burnett, and 24-year-old Davonte Conley. Buchannan and Conley are from Michigan and Burnett is from California.

The driver, Buchanan, supplied a Michigan driver’s license and a rental agreement documenting vehicle ownership. The deputy noted the agreement did not permit out of state travel and the vehicle rental contract had been issued to a female resident of Michigan who was not present in the vehicle.

During a conversation about the moving violation and issues regarding the rental agreement, Buchanan became obviously nervous and began shaking while answering questions. Passenger Burnett claimed he had just moved from California to Mesa, Arizona, and was riding with Buchanan to Michigan to drop off the other passenger, Conley.

Based on the deputy’s observations and discussion with the occupants, he suspected the likelihood of drugs or contraband inside the vehicle.

The deputy called for a YCSO certified K9 to conduct an exterior sniff of the vehicle. While checking outside the vehicle, the dog displayed a noticeable alert indicating an odor of drugs in and around the vehicle. The resulting search of the trunk area revealed a suitcase holding 6 individually wrapped packages containing marijuana with a total weight of 6.4 lbs.

All three vehicle occupants were arrested and transported to the Camp Verde Detention Center. Deputies also discovered Buchanan had provided his brother’s driver’s license, with the first name Thomas, to a deputy as identification.
