Dear Editor: Manuel Cruz for Mine Inspector Comments

Dear Editor and Manny,

Thank you for you for running during this difficult political climate. I do not think there is anything else you could have done to make a difference in the outcome this year. I hope you will keep your eye on 2014. I believe the ASMI position, as well as the ACC positions should be non-partisan races similar to local school boards but do not foresee anything like that in the future.

One change that has occurred as a result of your race is that the ASMI’s office has been responding to my inquiries and actually sent an inspector to a limestone quarry on private property to inspect dust conditions after I sent an email expressing my concerns. Additionally, this same project, previously working without a reclamation plan is now working on one with the ASMI’s office. You have made a difference!

Post election, I hope the office will continue on a path of citizen involvement in issues related to the office of the ASMI. If it does, we have you to thank.

As an aside, but related to junior mining companies is our freedoms as voters to put signs out at polling places outside of the 75′ limit. For the Nov. 2nd election I was told I could not put signs in the “public areas” (parking lot) of my polling place which is now owned by Rosemont Copper. Due to the instruction not to place signs on the Rosemont Ranch-Thurber Division, I put my signs in the road right of way the night before.

Other voters brought their own signs the morning of the election and poll workers moved the 75′  limit sign from 75′ outside of the entrance to the building where we vote to over 700′ away. To add to the confusion was a lack of cell service at the polling location. To make calls we had to get into the car and drive back out to State Route 83, a couple of miles away, and then drive back. The issue was resolved after two  Sheriffs arrived to help with communication and to negotiate a sign location.

I love to vote. I love to vote at the polling location, talk with folks, get the little sticker etc. I have been registered to vote since I was 17 (back in the ice ages) and voted in my first election when I turned 18 that year. I have not missed a presidential election since then and have voted in the majority of mid-term elections as well. To have my polling place hijacked really takes away the joy of the process for me.

ANYHOW, thanks again for your hard work.
