Budget Cuts Reinstated by Sedona City Council

sedonacitySedona AZ (May 25, 2009)The Sedona City Council once again reversed itself on cuts for its tentative 2009 – 2010 Budget taking money back from community associations that had seen funds cut, then had money restored, and now have funding reduced again.

During budget hearings held the week of May 4, 2009, the Sedona City Council suggested pulling an additional $100,000 out of its reserve rainy-day fund of approximately $10 million, and agreed to re-allocate $40,000 for the Chamber of Commerce’s Film Office which had previously been cut to zero; lowered a cut of 10 per cent to 5 per cent for the Sedona Recycles Center totaling $2,063; put back $30,000 for community-service grants; and, restored the Sedona Community Center budget to $150,000 after a suggested budget cut of $7,500 was added back in.

At its May 22, 2009, budget meeting, the Sedona Council decided to delete the $40,000 it had reallocated for the Sedona Film Office. The City Council then deleted the $7,500 it had allocated to the Sedona Community Center. The Council also took back the $2,063 it had allocated for the Sedona Recycles Center.

The Council reduced the Park Ranger Volunteer Program allocation to the $1,400 that had been requested from the $2,000 originally added. The City Council also deleted $15,000 from the arts grants, deleted the additional money totaling more than $26,000 for opening the Sedona Community Swimming Pool early in spring 2010, and reduced the Community Based Service Grants Program to $20,000 after moving it to a contingency situation based on how income develops during the year.

An additional $6,000 was also removed from the Council budget.

The Posse Grounds restroom funding remained untouched as it is a mandatory funding requirement of the American with Disabilities Act (ADA).

The Sedona City Council will open the tentative 2009/2010 budget for public review and possible action at its May 26, 2009, City Council meeting scheduled for 4:30 p.m. in the Sedona City Hall Council Chambers, 102 Roadrunner Drive, west Sedona. City residents are encouraged to attend.
