Sedona AZ (August 21, 2013) – On August 10, 2013, at about 12:30 in the early morning, John Vanderhoven, a Yavapai County Sheriff’s office deputy on duty in Bagdad (AZ) was sent to investigate a 911 call. The phone call had been received by YCSO dispatchers but no voice or sound was heard, and the line remained open.

The emergency call originated from a Bagdad home on Wilcox Drive. After Vanderhoven failed to receive any answer at the home’s front door, he investigated further and upon entering the back yard discovered the seemingly lifeless body of a 34-year-old man hanging from a tree with a make-shift noose around his neck.

Deputy Vanderhoven quickly cut the rope and lowered the man to the ground. Finding no breath or pulse, Vanderhoven called for paramedics and began CPR. After a few moments, the victim appeared to begin breathing but quickly lost respiratory function and heartbeat. The deputy continued with CPR until the arrival of the Bagdad Fire Department and Lifeline Ambulance.

Prior to being air-lifted to John C. Lincoln Hospital in Phoenix, the man regained consciousness and was able to answer some questions. It was determined that the man had placed the 911 call before attempting suicide. There is no determination of foul play involved in this incident and the man is expected to survive.

Deputy John Vanderhoven is a 17-year-veteran of the Yavapai County Sheriff’s Office. YCSO is very proud of Deputy Vanderhoven’s dedicated service and his life saving performance in this case.
