Sedona Smart Meter Installation Begins

aps logoSedona AZ (February 10, 2014) – The City of Sedona received the following information from Arizona Public Service Company (APS) regarding their plans for the installation of “smart meters” in Sedona:

Deployment of “smart meters” in Sedona is scheduled to begin on March 9, 2014.

Homeowners will receive a letter from APS approximately three weeks in advance of the deployment, with information about the installation schedule.

Door hangers will be placed on homes 2-3 days in advance of the meter installation.

APS will not deploy “smart meters” on homes where customers have requested to opt out.

In response to this new information on the APS plan to begin installing smart meters in Sedona, the Sedona City Council will hold a special meeting on Thursday, February 20, 2014, beginning at 2:00 p.m. to discuss and provide direction to city staff concerning possible actions that can be taken in response to citizen concerns about the proposed installation by Arizona Public Service Company of “smart meters” within the City limits. The public is invited to attend and will be allowed to provide comments on this issue.

On June 19, 2013, the City Council, by a 4-3 vote, directed staff to prepare a statement for the Arizona Corporation Commission to allow the Sedona community to opt-out without penalties.

The ACC is tasked with the responsibility to protect AZ ratepayers by weighing the costs and benefits of all state utility requests.

The ACC is tasked with the responsibility to protect AZ ratepayers by weighing the costs and benefits of all state utility requests.

The Arizona Corporation Commission (ACC) has not issued a decision on the APS request to establish additional opt out fees for consumers. At this point in time, opting out of a smart meter installation should not cost any extra fees for the consumer. However, if such a fee schedule is eventually approved by the ACC, residents who have opted out of the smart meter installation will most likely have to pay the opt out fee at the time it is approved or accept the installation of a smart meter.

The City of Sedona has no jurisdictional authority regarding the installation of “smart meters” or the establishment of opt out fees; that authority is vested with the ACC by State statute. For more information on public input with the ACC regarding “smart meters,” please go to edocket.azcc.gov/ and search for Docket Number 11-0328.

This meeting should have been held weeks ago.

    @Tom Bergen.
city council too busy with meetings about buying up property and giving money to “non profit” chamber of commerce to fit in discussion about potentially lethal smart meters.

That is typical Gioello disinfo. In case anyone missed it, see my Sedona Eye article, City Offers Misleading Defeatist Smart Meter Information.

@Tom Bergen – I gave Council the solution last June. They did nothing.

  10. ALERT Do not believe what is the “offical” statement above made by APS. We have heard of instances where APS is targeting one or two residence in our neighborhoods where they have replaced analog meters with blue tags with digital meters (also dangerous for the “dirty electricity” they emit) and telling people they will save money and that they are not a threat to their health, etc. This is patently untrue. Anyone with a digital meter may refuse the smart meter especially while the AZ Department of Health Services is continuing its year-long $1 million research on the effects of radio frequency on peoples’ health. If you selected “Time of Use” billing, most likely you have received a digital meter. You may switch back to flat rate which Sedona Smart Meter Awareness recommends and have that digital removed. If your analog was removed without your authorization, please file a complaint with the ACC. Info on how to do that is here . . . http://www.sedonasmartmeterawareness.com/WHAT-CAN-I-DO-.html

  11. The precautionary principle states that if an action or policy has a suspected risk of causing harm to the public or to the environment, in the absence of scientific consensus, the burden of proof that it is NOT harmful falls on those taking an action.

That would be APS, not residents. I’m listening APS!!!!! Talk to us truthfully.

Call APS at 800-253-9405, keeping a record of the date and time you called and the person you spoke with. Opt out. Demand a blue tag. Talk to your neighbors. Talk to your favorite store owners and restaurants. It is up to each individual to take action. Who ever pays the electric bill. RENTER OR OWNER, no matter. Call.

Remember the old saying, When in doubt…..DON’T. Don’t let APS install a ‘smart meter’ at your residence until they prove it is safe. We give them enough money for them to extend us this courtesy. Don’t you think?

  13. ALERT – SAVE YOUR ANALOG METER NOW! APS is replacing analog meters from properties that”opted out” (e.g., refused) with digital meters according to our reports. 300 analog meters have been replaced with “digital” meters so far.

This is contrary to ACC’s directive given on 08/05/13 during its Staff Meeting:
Note that based on its year-long study by the AZ Department of Health Services on the health effects of RF emitted by “smart” meters, anyone may have their “digital” meter replaced with an analog meter

  14. FYI Only 1 day to submit comments!!!

U R G E N T The National Highway Trafic Safety Administration is in the process of finalizing its 2014 – 2018 Strategic plan and because of that is taking comments for the next 1 day!

Please take the time to formulate a brief comment about the dangers of automating vehicles using wireless technology due to increased exposure to RF radiation – a possible carcinogen, impaired driving abilities, and let us not forget to mention what an access restricting move this would be – totally in violation of the ADA.
