Sedona Museum to Host Arizona Centennial Events

Sedona Heritage Museum

Sedona AZ (February 4, 2012) – The Sedona Heritage Museum has planned a comprehensive schedule of local events celebrating Arizona’s Centennial year and proudly announce that several of the events are now designated “Official Arizona Centennial Events” by the State Committee.

A full week of events leading up to statehood day will kick off Wednesday, February 8, 2012. Join Arizona author and historian Jim Turner  at 9:00 a.m. for his presentation of “Arizona Statehood, All the Bells & Whistles” co-sponsored by the Arizona Humanities Council. See historic images and cartoons and learn about the road to statehood that included political factions applying pressure to the state constitution’s content. Turner’s presentation is free to the public and all are welcome.

Saturday, February 11, 2012 at 2:00 in the afternoon, Sedona Museum audiences may enjoy a Radio Theater style performance “Arizona Constitutional Convention-You Are There.” This original show shares segments of the actual 1910 debates from the Arizona’s state constitutional convention floor. Some of the language and topics will seem vintage but to the surprise of many, a few of the topics are still being debated in the state today! In the end, Arizonans adopted the most progressive state constitution in the United States.

After the theatre show, cast members will share further information about the debates and draw parallels between the actions of 100 years ago and how Arizonans continue to impact state governing now. Refreshments, souvenirs, and good fun accompany all tickets purchased, $7 for adults and $4 for children ages 6-11.  This Sedona Heritage Museum performance has been designated an Official Event of the Arizona Centennial.

Sunday, February 12, 2012, the Sedona Heritage Museum will host an Arizona CentennialSplatter DabBreakfast from 9:00 a.m. until noon.  Splatter Dabs are pancakes to all you greenhorns! During the Splatter Dabs breakfast, local pioneer families will be honored and attending descendants will be introduced, along with descendants of families that were living in Arizona in 1912. There will be music and programs during this Official Event of the Arizona Centennial. Breakfast is only $3, thanks to sponsor Arizona Lottery.

An encore performance of the Sedona Heritage Museum’s Radio Theater “Arizona Constitutional Convention-You Are There” show will begin at 2:00 p.m. after the Splatter Dabs breakfast.

The Sedona Heritage Museum week-long series of Centennial events concludes February 14, 2012 at 1:50 p.m. with an Arizona Centennial Community “Bell-Ringing” celebration at Wayside Chapel on SR 89A in uptown Sedona.

The Museum is coordinating all churches, schools, and businesses with building bells to ring the bells for one full minute starting at exactly 2:14 p.m. Citizens and town guests are welcome for the Wayside Church program featuring Sedona and T.C. Schnebly’s granddaughter, Pat Schnebly Ceballos, who will help ring the bell in the Chapel’s bell tower – a bell originally purchased with Sedona Schnebly’s memorial money back in 1951 for ‘her’ church.

Everyone is encouraged to bring a bell, download a bell ‘app’ to cell phones, and or purchase a commemorative bell that the Museum will have available before the event. After the 60 seconds of celebratory noise-making, the Women of Wayside will treat participants with homemade bell-shaped cookies and beverages. This is a free event and has been designated an Official Event of the Arizona Centennial. All are welcome.

These events and others will be held at the Sedona Heritage Museum, 735 Jordan Road, Sedona Arizona unless otherwise noted. Visit the museum’s web site www.sedonamuseum.org or call 928-282-7038. Follow the Sedona Eye for Arizona Centennial events!

The Sedona Heritage Museum will once again present its popular historic sites tours of Oak Creek Canyon’s historic sites on April 12, 13, and 14.

The tours will be narrated by Paul Thompson, the grandson of pioneer homesteader Jim Thompson, the Sedona area’s first permanent white settler who came here in 1876, and son of Albert Thompson who wrote many of the stories in the book, “Those Early Days”. A comfortable 14-passenger luxury coach will stop at historic places from Uptown Sedona to upper Oak Creek Canyon and back. Each tour will depart at 9:00 a.m. and return at approximately noon. Tickets are $50 for Sedona Historical Society members and $55 for non-members. Tickets maybe purchased over the phone or in person at the Museum, 928-282-7038.
