Cowboy Artists of America in Sedona

Sedona AZ (September 25, 2010) – The Sedona Heritage Museum has been notified that a historic photo from its Collection has been selected for inclusion in this year’s Arizona Archives Month posters.

The museum photo submission commemorating the creation of the ‘Cowboy Artists of America‘ in Sedona in 1965 will appear on the state-wide poster celebrating National Archives Month in October. This is the second time a photo from the Sedona Heritage Museum’s extensive collection has been chosen for an Archives Month poster, the first time was in 2006.

Th 2010 poster theme is “Arizona’s Past Deserves a Future” and photos, documents and maps accepted for the poster are considered to best represent significant events, or special people or places around Arizona which have been preserved by local institutions. The photo of ‘Cowboy Artists of America‘ founders meets the criteria as a significant Arizona event.

The aim of the CAA founders was to “perpetuate the culture of the Old West, ensure authentic representation of the life of the West, protect artists’ rights and educate the public about cowboy art.” That moment has been preserved in this photo by Elizabeth Rigby, local photographer and reporter. The Sedona Heritage Museum now owns and cares for the E. Rigby Collection of over 14,000 photos.

Arizonans are invited to join in the celebration of the valuable work of Arizona repositories. The purpose of October Archives Month is to celebrate the value of Arizona’s historical records, to publicize the many ways these records enrich our lives, to recognize those who maintain our communities’ historical records and to increase public awareness of the importance of preserving historical records in repositories, institutions and tribal archives across the state.

Posters will be displayed at museums and public repositories around the state during the month of October. For more information, contact the Sedona Heritage Museum at 928-282-7038.
