Proposed Sustainable Pilgrimage Site in Sedona

SedonaEye.com columnist Eddie Maddock

SedonaEye.com columnist Eddie Maddock review of the October 27 City Council meeting addresses public concerns about 100 acres of city land being offered for a Sedona metaphysical and spiritual pilgrimage “headquarters”

Sedona AZ (October 29, 2015) – Following the City of Sedona October 27 Council meeting and an agenda decision to contact a Dr. Shailesh Rao to discuss benefits of a sustainable vegan lifestyle community in Sedona, SedonaEye.com columnist Eddie Maddock reviewed the Council meeting video to address public concerns, comments and questions about Dr. Rao and a proposed City of Sedona and Council relationship:

ORIGIN: At the request of Councilman Jon Thompson and Mayor Sandy Moriarty, this item was placed on a City Council Agenda. Jon Thompson made contact with Dr. Sailesh Rao, a man from Phoenix who has been part of an international consortium strategizing about alleged climate change and has worked closely with the United Nations.

PURPOSE: Based on compatibility with a Sedona Community Plan provision to establish sustainability and conserve resources, implementation of this plan was offered as a suggestion for future consideration.

Unlike other pilgrimage sacred sites, Dr. Rao considers Sedona as being removed from organized religion, but connected more with spirituality and the metaphysical. For that reason and Sedona’s “steady stream of visitors” he even suggested consideration for Sedona to be the “Headquarters” for his mission that he emphasized is largely directed towards promoting a vegan diet and saving animals.

INTENT: For Mr. Rao to attend the meeting and make a presentation to City Council for the purpose of explaining methods by which his consortium operates at selected worldwide locations. They are advocates of promoting and educating visitors, including overnight stays, on the environmental footprint of lifestyle choices and sustainable alternatives.

Identified as “The Sacred Lifeline Project” the basic premises are:

Common Theme: Cherish Life;
Close to Earth: Simple Living;
Close to Nature: Sustained Living;
Close to the Soul: Spiritual Living;
Close to the People: Communal Living
Close to its Environs: Connected Living

Considerations to be included in a Life Line site project are micro housing, villages, gardens, farming plots, vegan store, café/restaurant, market place, library, and entry plaza. Proposed activities are yoga, meditation, farming, biking, walking, classes, gardening, reading, and art/culture.

Water conservation has been researched such as “Condensation Water Harvesting” to capture water from the air, as well as, recycling gray water for irrigation purposes among other methods of renewable energy.

Although all members of the City Council expressed support for sustainability, comments and questions were addressed, including, but not limited to:

  • Amount of land needed – 100 acres, preferably provided through a long-term lease agreement with the City; reassurance the project was not affiliated with any particular organized religion; an estimated two-year time frame for project completion once land was acquired. “A new demographic of visitors” was offered as one way in which the city might benefit as such a facility is anticipated to attract a younger generation.

Councilwoman Jessica Williamson questioned availability of 100 acres and emphasized her opposition to city financial support and/or land contribution. She also questioned feasibility for the project.

After expressing some concern about crowd control, Councilman Mark DiNunzio did commit to remain “open minded” and encouraged continuing the conversation and to remain involved by monitoring progress.

Councilman Jon Thompson, originator of bringing this matter to City Council, characterized the 100 acres as “not a deal killer” and brought up The Dells land owned by the City, but not “giving it away.” He encouraged a letter on behalf of the City of Sedona to be forthcoming to indicate acceptance and compatibility with the concept and offered his personal services to work towards “making it happen.”

Referencing Sedona’s “aging population” Councilman Thompson spoke in favor of an opportunity to attract younger people to the area.

Mr. Thompson stated further: “We may need to expand to talk with our other communities. One of the things we learned from recent discussion abut a National Monument Designation here is that we’re not just Sedona here but we’re the Sedona area. Maybe it’s the area that needs to embrace this and we need to bring in other communities and see how they can support it and so forth. But I would absolutely, absolutely, say that we should ask our city manager to write that letter saying we are intrigued by the concept, that there is alignment with your goals and our goals as a city, and that we have no idea whether it could work but we would be willing to give it that effort.”

Thompson intends to encourage placing this high on the 2016 list of Council Priorities when Council discussions ensue in December.

After five speakers from the public made supportive statements, including one reference to the potential for Sedona to become the “Spiritual Mecca of the World,” Mayor Moriarty, agreeing to remain open minded with a supportive city letter, called for Council comments in order to reach a conclusion.

SUMMATION: City Manager Justin Clifford suggested the letter be very explicit and cautioned about writing anything that might be misconstrued as an agreement to participate, such as development approval or partnership.

Councilman Scott Jablow was also concerned about anything in writing that would convey false hope, while Councilman John Martinez definitely objected to the letter because he, himself, was not “in alignment” although he qualified the concept was “a wonderful idea” that reminded him “of the 60’s.”

Councilwoman Angela LeFevre, agreeing with Martinez, has concerns with aligning ourselves to a certain project while Mark DiNunzio maintained an open minded procedure keeping in mind not one size fits all. Jessica Williamson, although acknowledging sustainability as a global concern has various meanings, agreed the letter should be written.

With the exception of John Martinez, direction was given to Sedona City Manager, Justin Clifford, to proceed with writing the letter based on the cautionary suggestions previously outlined by him.

Let me get this right….after all I’m spiritual in Sedona. Here’s one from a flock who don’t believe every vegan spiritual line fed to upper class white Americans by someone from India OR after fifteen minutes of research:

DOCTOR Rao (PhD from where?) is a wannabe promoting $1 solar stoves on his website & high fives himself and a few university buds for distributing a mere 1000 in India – impressive NOT; he doesn’t have any UN credentials, he doesn’t have any climate control credentials, he’s a blogger that went to Paris for a metaphysical conference and wrote Butterfly Dharma or was that shwarma, nope he’s VEGAN because his Indian RELIGION says to be – what a COWSPIRACY THEY HAVE GOING ON IN INDIA!! Let Shailesh go back to India and buy cheap land there for his Life Phony project headquarters – REALLY??? REALLY!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Yeh & he seems to say that he lives in California not Phoenix. JT, you suffer from repeated Cranial-Rectal Inversions. Please see a specialist as it appears to have gone viral to every councilor except Martinez…

  3. @Eddie,

Hmmm!!! Sounds suspiciously like the “new” KSB-Sierra Club mantra. Or, maybe its the subtle meditative side of United Nations Agenda 21/Sustainable Development. Better hurry up, though, since Agenda 21 is about to about to be re-agendized as UN Agenda 30…no kidding!

  4. TN says:

????Water conservation has been researched such as “Condensation Water Harvesting” to capture water from the air, as well as, recycling gray water for irrigation purposes among other methods of renewable energy????

This is a desert. There isn’t any condensation in the air except during monsoon season and sometimes not then. What’s Plan B?

Can someone or anyone say CULT!!!

  8. Clarification under caption:

The city did not, at least publicly, offer The Dells land. Dr. Rao addressed the question of how much land they were seeking (100 acres) and they were interested in a long term lease with the city . It was after that when Jon Thompson brought up The Dells property.

The gentleman that spoke during public forum stated he had met Dr. Rao the previous evening, courtesy of Mr. Thompson. So quite possibly the city owned land had been discussed at a private get-together at that time. It’s anyone’s guess.

  9. Chris Bork says:

@warren Insanity is right, Thompson must be a brick shy but it’s the other SHEEPLE on the council incapable of sitting there and not knowing they’re hearing BS. @just saying I can say it — CULT

Why wasn’t this guy vetted BEFORE the meeting???? Not only has he likely never grown a plant from dirt, he’s not even a scientist. City Manager, no excuse for you falling for it.

  10. let’s buy JT a drum and send him out when the moon is full to sit in a circle with people who toke too much…never mind he’s already found that crowd sitting in a half circle under city hall fluorescent lights high on power

Wow. JT, we wasted how much council time on this?

  13. @eddie M

So basically Eddie what your doing is “Stirring The Pot” so the crazy hate mongers who think your smart get all pumped up….

So they gave this guy some time to present at a council meeting, so what…
Stir up the hate mongers Eddie M…
Actually the more I think of it, a peacful settlement here in town sounds nice compared to the hate mongers you attract..
Just a small aside note: a smaller picture of yourself attached to your “opinion” would be appreciated..
You and J Rick love to see yourselves on a local blog I guess..
Smaller please if not at all

  14. Speaking of cults there was another rather large parcel of land potentially available mentioned at that meeting. Wonder if it’s the former home of Gabriel of Sedona and his loyal believers down by Red Rock Crossing? No matter what the city should STAY OUT OF IT. (and that property is also out of city limits but JT thinks incorporated Sedona has no boundaries, like his ego)

Did anyone else notice that Mayor Sandy didn’t stifle applause at that meeting? She also allows it on chamber of commerce issues and other of her pet projects. But definitely NOT at the National Monument discussions.

  15. J. J. says:

Wow. I didn’t think the council could come up with a more worthless idea than the National Monument. Proved me wrong.

  16. Kudos says:

Hats off to Keith from Spiritual World Sedona!

Kudos for calling this what it is – especially:

“JT, you suffer from repeated Cranial-Rectal Inversions. Please see a specialist as it appears to have gone viral to every councilor except Martinez…”

And just who could possibly top that? Brilliant!

  17. Andrea says:

Let’s hope this meeting transpired for pure entertainment value; City Council needed some downtime from their strenuous workload. Neither the cowboys nor the Apaches would be pleased with 100 acres of land fenced off for this purpose. Nor would the skunks, bobcats, coyotes and Javelina. Very UN-spiritual, IMO. Come on, Jon…put your nose to the grindstone a little harder.

  18. WRITE A LETTER???? WHY??? Next Dr Rao will want just 50 acres because we dangled a carrot in the form of a letter.
Most of us do what we can to preserve our resources and are not here to save the poor Earth Pigs who don’t know a VEGAN from a Cardigan.

  19. Lea Martin says:

Did JT slip on a COW pie and hit his head or has he just been drinking too much Calfeine?

  20. @West Sedona Resident. The appropriate place to register your complaints relating to editorial decisions is with the Publisher/Editor of Sedona Eye.

  21. In Portland and everywhere else except on TV DIY channels because they need something to talk about that seems cutting edge the best “micro housing” is called MOBILE HOMES or RVs, PREFAB or MODULAR, the greatest concept for housing since tract homes. Why? Mass production allows cost controls and competition allows better quality. Micro housing is a Mercedes cost for an outhouse outcome and it’s designed for one person only. You want to spend $30K and get enough room for a family, you’ll buy a mobile or a camper not a micro house. If that man is that stupid to put one over on you then good luck Sedona AZ.

  22. Andrea says:

@West Sedona Resident: We need a place to vent. What would be worse is no forum at all. Obviously there are strong emotions going on here. Hate is a strong word and “hate-monger” is not helpful or accurate.

  23. Come on Jessica. If it’s to hot in the frying pan then quit. Sedona City Council is suspose to do what right for the city. Enough of your trash talk. You just don’t want the people to know the stupid crap you are pulling. Get back to business and put your ego aside.

  24. @West Sedona Resident: I watched the meeting and this article is accurately stating just the facts whereas your accusations are very disturbing to suggest that there’s some malicious intent going on here.
If you want peaceful you should start with yourself. Whoever you are.

  25. webbright says:

What is the Council drinking in their Kool-Aid? Such a waste of time! Doesn’t the Council have more important things to discuss about the future of Sedona? Dr. Rao should go back to India and clean up that country!

  26. As a “Climate Healer”, Dr. Rao’s quest is certainly admirable, but in my opinion, it is a bit far reaching for most. There is not one solution to address the problem of earth changes. Methane is the 2nd most prevalent greenhouse gas emitted in the US that comes from human activity and contributes 60% of the total methane emissions. Since LANDFILLS are the 3rd largest source of methane emissions the easiest and simplest way we can ALL do our part is by reducing consumption, reusing our/someone elses old stuff and RECYCLING> We have the perfect place to do just that right here in our own backyard at Sedona Recycles – Mayor Sandy Moriarity co founded some 25 years ago. This is a very smart place to get started if one is not already on board.

  27. Andrea says:

Mr. Rao probably has handlers and assistants that do his recycling for him. What was the name of that cult that moved out of here a few years ago? They had an “experiment” going on with growing food, sustainable living, etc. They were not a happy bunch, from what I could see. And their land sat there unoccupied for years after they left.. Maybe it’s still for sale.

  28. Holy Cow says:

Holy Cow! (and no insult intended to vegetarians or vegans) Does anyone realize the opportunity bestowed on Sedona?

With the efforts of Keep Sedona Beautiful to turn this place into a “National Monument,” and now this recent quest to seek status of a “Spiritual Mecca of the World,” what an opportunity to contact national media and promote Sedona in the style we so deserve.

No more penny-ante deals with Chamber of Commerce, or anyone else for that matter! No siree! Time to bring in the big guns. Anyone remember when it was 60 Minutes or another major production network did a story on Gabriel of Sedona? Fact folks! (Of course, Gabriel and Production left Sedona not long after it aired. Wonder why?)

Anyways, time to contact major news media and get the show on the road. How funny would it be for them to expose the overwhelming opposition, although at least so far only for a National Monument, as KSB forges ahead to get the Prez to sign the doc. Lordy, Lordy – Sedona, at long last you are about to receive your reward. Big things are in store for you. In the meantime, C of C, start packing your bags. Your self-imposed glory might be short lived.

  29. Sandy Moriarity….

Thanks for doing something constructive in Sedona

“A recycling center in town that’s been productive for 25 years”
    Wow that’s pretty impressive.

If you were more like Eddie M nothing would of been accomplished except a vast amount of hate letters, finger pointing, and in general being a ass.
However if she was able to actually DO something inportant in town I am sure she would have a portrait of herself on it and her name in large letters.

  30. @Holy Cow: You need to go to http://www.culteducation.com and read the analysis of the Aquarian Concept Community prepared by former members of Gabriel of Sedona. Sedona is ALREADY a “Spiritual Mecca” without all the pomp and circumstance of a National Monument or a Sustainable Pilgrimage.

  31. Al says:

Throwing negativity at the author? Negative comments are personal, not article content driven. Don’t pay attention folks to distractions. The subject is serious and can be deadly if ignored. People who are followers are weak! Look at Angel Valley deaths, look at Gabriel of Sedona believers, look at cults in town and out in Cottonwood, all cut from the same cloth of self aggrandizement, weak minds and no self worth, and yes-madness. These cults all prey on and attract low self esteem people, old hippies, easily influenced, unemployed, no intelligence, drugged out or alcoholic young and old. Shame on the Council for promoting and not protecting the weak willed and lost. Call this Indian’s made up fantasy land (because he’s never done it before) for what it is, a free ride. Give him one straight out of town. He’s a doctor of a fool and of fools.

  32. Angels Song says:

went to angel valley & cried walking labyrinth!!!!!

  33. Andrea says:

This comment is directed to all the Busy Beavers out there including @West Sedona Resident. Have you ever observed this about human civilization: there are DO-ers and there are Others. Hmm? The DO-ers, somehow, have got it in their heads that they are superior to the Observers and the Listeners. Why don’t you quit peacocking and simply learn how to observe? I know—it’s really hard! But that way you won’t turn into a Blowhard, exhausting yourself and everyone around you. Democracy is civilized, not just for Builders, Big Shots and Loudmouths.

  34. Observation says:

Quite possibly the most astute observation of the well explained subject matter of that recent council meeting are the words uttered by Counselor Martinez:

” he qualified the concept was ‘a wonderful idea’ that reminded him ‘of the 60’s.'”

Right on, Mr. M. – way to go!

  35. magickj says:

@Angels Song – I cry every time I think of my friend, Kirby Brown, who left behind 2 small children and a loving and doting husband. Yes, you cried walking the labyrinth – in mourning for those 3 lost souls and 19 others who were injured from the Weekend Warrior event put on by James Arthur Ray. After the murders, Ray served a mere 20 months and Angel Valley got A LOT of money from resulting lawsuits. If the (deleted by editor) (owners) would have paid attention and saw that the SAME sweat lodge was being rebuilt from the previous year’s weekend event, maybe they would have said something. The previous year the same thing happened, no one died and only 5 were injured – 2 are still on dialysis.

I am more than delighted to hear that Angel Valley may be shutting down due to karma and financial difficulties. Couldn’t have happened to a more deserving couple! And to think that these people have headed up the Sedona Metaphysical Spiritual Group since the murders is just insane! What does that say for Sedona spirituality?

As far as Gabriel and his clan goes – again very happy that the group has left town. After my father-in-law passed away, we brought my mother-in-law to our home. It wasn’t long before the Aquarian Concepts community followed her home and wanted to “do things” for her and asked uncomfortable questions about our mortgage. Gabriel is well-known for befriending the elderly and being named in wills – he received many homes by doing so. After he hid a couple of teenage runaways from their parents he was chased out of town. I do hope we never hear of the likes of them again.

Let’s be welcoming to sustainable businesses, but let’s not get talked into paying for them either. There’s no such thing as a FREE LUNCH!

  36. Hawk, Sedona says:

I like Angel’s Valley people!! He used to be a reader years back!! Sympathies for the poor people that died there but they CHOSE to be there!! Why’s that a responsibility of owners or people working there even of James Ray himself?? Free Will can mean things happen!!

  37. magickj says:

Kirby Brown did not CHOOSE to lie on a dirt floor and die in her yellow bikini! She asked to leave. She was not permitted to. Hawk, if you were at the trial in Prescott, you would have heard testimony from the participants. You would have heard her parents speak. It would have broke your heart (if you have one).

The Angel Valley sweat lodge deaths ABSOLUTELY destroyed the real spirituality in Sedona with GREED!

  38. magickj says:

ps correction – the trial was in Camp Verde. I apologize, I just wrote down the wrong town.

Hawk – with that line of thinking, if I get hit by a drunk driver, then it’s my responsibility because I chose to drive? get real. At the trial, Ray admitted that the deaths were his fault. As people were dragged out of the tent, Ray got up and went and took a shower – (deleted by editor). If they were such good psychics, why didn’t they see this coming? Especially because the year before there was a “near miss.” Doesn’t take much psychic power or basic intelligence to think the same (or worse) might happen again. (deleted by editor)

Recently, another acquaintance, Darryl Anka (aka Bashar) did an event at Angel Valley. The (deleted by editor).

  39. I love Sedona and remember this tragic time. I’m distressed that your friend and family member died @majickj but this Kirby and friends decision was to go in the lodge & that’s always a different take on it. If Mr. Ray served 20 months it must be because a jury agreed with this Hark. This is an important subject about anger and conflict, the sweat lodge property must have regrets and paying money in a lawsuit must have hurt it badly. Similar things happened in Michigan and around the world. Help your friend’s family by forgiveness and God bless your hurting hearts in Sedona.

  40. J. J. says:

    Absolutely correct Magickj!

And getting back to the topic, as you can see the weak-minded (Angels Song and Hawk) would be tripping all over themselves to get Dr Rao’s dog and pony show up and running and paid by the citizens of Sedona.

I, for one, have had enough. If Dr Rao would like to create this “sustainable utopia” let him do it on his own dime.

  41. Angie D. says:

This is a very interesting article and nothing appears to be written as self-serving or opinionated. In fact, a couple of items caused me to go watch the video of the meeting and the reporting was accurate.

Sometimes when people point fingers at others they accuse them of exactly what they themselves are doing. There are no personal judgments contained in the above report of the meeting so those who claim otherwise are revealing very concerning personalty flaws of their own.

We deserve to have accurate facts of current events and Sedona Eye provides a wonderful community service. From city hall reports, to Verde Valley and even broader newsworthy issues, the articles provided are generally well received and generate many comments. Don’t allow negative personal comments to intervene. On the other hand, the angrier at least one person becomes might be another indication of a job well done.

  42. magickj says:

Well Kelly Johnson, you’re not from around here and you didn’t follow the story of the sweat lodge deaths very closely or you would have know that Angel Valley RECEIVED a handsome payout after the murders. It’s been 10 years and obviously they went thru that money and now need more more more more more more

because they keep getting into one lawsuit after another.

And if you’re a member of the spiritual community in Sedona, you’ll find out that people like the owners of the AV prey upon people like Angels Song and Hawk here.

We don’t need another cult-like fanatic in Sedona and we certainly don’t need Sedona to pay for one. I wish Dr Rao all the luck, but Sedona has NO business footing the bill for another pie in the sky idea.

  43. magickj says:

I just notice the editor has deleted several of my comments.

If you have any questions about what i’ve reported here, why don’t you call Angel Valley and ask “What happened after the Ray trail?”

and then ask, “What happened after the Bashar event? Why did Anka say he’d never use the AV venue again?”

    Do your own research.

  47. Can the Council do more damage to Sedona? Yes. Glanced at links & can’t help but ask Jon & rest why they’d not send this beggar to the local real estate company instead of fawning over a land grab?

Question for city attorney? If this had been city provided land, how much would taxpayers be paying to attorneys if a similar outcome like suicide or death resulting from this half baked sustainable farm idea like Angel Valley or Gabriel of Sedona lands?

NEWS TO POLITICIANS – Sustainable farming is what FARMERS do. Not talking Monsanto big ag, but FARMERS. Ask Cornucopia, ask at the Sedona farmers market each week. Want to promote sustainable farming then provide free space in a park for the Sedona farmers market each week? Come on Kristen, get on the agenda and ASK for 100 acres for the market & demand the council gives to your hard work.

  48. Nick says:

Past here consisted of pioneers and cow hands and farmers and merchants that settled on land Indians didn’t want or use from what archaeologists know about this area. Like many before over the centuries drifters came through on the way somewhere else until a few stayed and scratched out a meager living. First tourists we could call them. When you live and pay and maintain your way you get respect. When you visit and leave you do the respectful thing of leaving it same or better or get no invitation back. Council needs to remember this. Bill, Uptown

  49. The Jig's Up says:

No wonder Dr. Rao came up with the bright idea of a long-term lease with the city, and Jon Thompson conveniently threw in the city-owned property at The Dells.

At the council meeting, subject of the above article, one of the public speakers, Marty Landa, gave accolades to JT and “a group he and his wife have come to convene last year called The Inspiration of Sedona” for having the opportunity of meeting Dr. Rao the night before the meeting. Do you suppose that get-together was for the purpose of “rehearsing” their roles at the following night performance?

Not only that but Marty Landa took the opportunity to promote his group during his three minute public spiel, mentioning (not by name) but that certain other council members had attended his organization’s sessions and extended an invitation to all, including those watching live streaming, that future events planned by the group will be occurring in Sedona, including at the Mary Fisher Theater.

A further indication this farce of a meeting was pre-orchestrated was when Landa made reference to a large parcel of property in Sedona (besides The Dellsl) which might possibly be available. That mysterious property was also mentioned during the course of the city council meeting.

Another con-job by shifty council members using their elected positions to push through their own organizations and agendas? Is Jon Thompson a member of “The Inspiration of Sedona?” Are other city council members? What about conflict of interest and pushing through yet another special group through the process of Sedona City legislation and adding to the burden of City Staff when they don’t even have time to accomplish what’s already on their plates.

Oh, and by the way, Marty Landa has a 284 phone number, which is the Village of Oak Creek and not within Incorporated City of Sedona. That is clearly another example of how people outside limits are being given the opportunity to control Sedona City Council Meetings! They are not registered voters. But it isn’t the responsible of those folks, many of whom are our friends, that in all probability are not aware that Sedona City Hall is not provided for their pleasure. That’s up to the elected members of Sedona City Council to set the record straight and once and for all accept that they are NOT JUDGE AND JURY FOR THE ENTIRE VERDE VALLEY.

A suggestion to those that are confused about Sedona City Limits, there’s an article on Sedona Eye clearly detailing the confines of the limitations. In the meantime, another option would be for them to consider annexing into the incorporated area and become a legitimate voice at Sedona City Council meetings instead of riding on the gravy train and just showing up to grab free money for more and more special interests and personal agendas that have nothing at all whatsoever to do with legitimate incorporated City of Sedona government.
