PASSING THE TORCH

As the final member of the “Original 8 Road Warriors“, I have decided to step aside to let someone else define the future of the litter cleanup, recycling and education movement that we began in February 2009.  Our movement, which entails the picking up and bagging of roadside trash, displaying it for educational purposes and then separating out the recyclable elements,  has been widely acknowledged as an effective program in helping to maintain the beauty of our county and state roads.

I, in turn, would like to acknowledge the generosity of both local and out-of-state business owners who donated over $8,000 in raffle prizes in 2009 and 2010. In addition there have been cash donations from both local and out-of state friends to help defray some of our overhead costs. All of this is greatly appreciated.

After I step down on May 22, I will continue to explore the cost-benefit ratio of the Arizona taxpayer-funded “Adopt-A-Highway” program. Preliminary results of this study already indicate that the program has many weaknesses both in procedure and in financial outlay. This Adopt-A-Highway evaluation will be my primary project for 2010. There will also be periodic stories about the progress of the litter movement and the people who make it happen.

A final thought:  Imagine, that if everyone who debated the pros and cons of the 40 foot Mago statue and brought it to a resolution, could come together to resolve the litter problem that generated, in only 10 months, 581 bags of roadside blight, bags that would, if stacked on top of each other, create a shameful monument 1,452 feet high, dwarfing the Mago statue. Public debate anyone?
