NAU hosts discussion about Railroads, American West and Flagstaff

Flagstaff AZ train station

Sedona AZ – Local experts from the Flagstaff community and NAU subject-matter experts will gather at Northern Arizona University to discuss the historic, current and future impact of the railroad in Flagstaff.

A panel discussion, Current Conversations: Northern Arizona and the American West – The Railroads, is from 5:30 to 7:00 p.m. on Friday, April 5, 2019, in the Liberal Arts (Bldg. 18), Room 120. The event is free. Community and campus are encouraged to attend and participate.

It’s a big year for train towns. May 2019 marks the 150th anniversary of the completion of the transcontinental railroad, a project that transformed the West forever. Northern Arizona continues to be affected by decisions made by the Burlington Northern-Santa Fe railroad as it makes improvements that will shape Flagstaff’s future.

Panelists:

• Local historian Dr. John Westerlund
• NAU associate professor Eric Meeks, who specializes in race, labor and Western history
• NAU professor of Public History and the American West, Mike Amundson
• City of Flagstaff Office of Comprehensive Planning, Sarah Dechter
• City of Flagstaff Visitor’s Bureau, Jessica Lawrence
• Pioneer Museum and Arizona Historical Society, Sacha Siskonen

Community parking passes are available at nau.edu/guest.

Current Conversations: Northern Arizona and the American West – The Railroads is sponsored by the Arizona Humanities Council, NAU’s College of Arts and Letters, the Departments of English and History, and the McAllister Endowed Chair in Community, Culture and Environment.
