Homeowner Strikes Out Burglar With Baseball Bat

Shane Cox arrested while burglarizing Rimrock AZ home

Sedona AZ (September 30, 2012) – Just after midnight on September 29, 2012, Yavapai County Sheriff Office deputies were called to a residence in the 5900 block of North Bentley Drive, Rimrock, Arizona. Upon arrival, YCSO deputies found the homeowner restraining a burglar.

Deputies took custody of the burglary suspect identified as 30- year-old Shane Cox, a resident of Camp Verde, Arizona. The suspect was injured and treated by EMS personnel on the front porch of the North Bentley Drive home.

The Rimrock homeowner told YCSO deputies that he, and other family members, had earlier noticed a man wearing all black, carrying a black backpack, walking on Bentley Drive. That same man, a stranger, eventually came to their front door and rang the bell. The residents chose not to answer.

A few minutes later, the family heard noises outside a southwest bedroom window and realized the man had entered their home.

The trespasser began prowling the home using a flashlight to guide his way along a hallway. By this time, the homeowner was positioned in his daughter’s bedroom adjacent to the hallway. The homeowner entered the hall and struck the suspect with a baseball bat. Following a brief struggle, the suspect was subdued and restrained on the front porch pending  YCSO deputies arrival.

Cox was wearing all black clothing including his hat, a pair of gloves, and a hooded sweater. His backpack contained burglary tools listed as a second flashlight, black beanie, pry bar, and screwdriver. Cox possessed a folding knife in his pocket which the homeowner had removed.

Cox was treated at the Verde Valley Medical Center and then booked at the Camp Verde Detention Center. Current charges filed against Cox are Burglary (1st degree), Trespassing, Criminal Damage, Possession of Burglary Tools, and AssaultCox remains in-custody on a $20,000 bond.

  4. You don’t know this guy raejoan lewes of goodyear az. He has a heart of gold and has never done a drug a day of his life. You don’t know the whole story so think before you speak not everyone in this world is a bad person just because they make mistakes. Your probably not the brightest crayon in the box yourself. I hope Carma comes back and bights you in the ass hard because I know you aren’t perfect. Ignorance is bliss when people judge a book by its cover. Just for your information this so called “scum” and “meth head” saved my life. So think before you speak or judge a book by its cover… Have a great day.

Think about who your friend is. These people could have shot him, he could have gotten himself or someone else killed; the homeowners could be traumatized by this now. A home invasion does not just end, there are repercussions.

Just what is the whole story? My quiet dog would have eaten him as soon as he got in the window. So he saved your life and Charles Manson was a cute baby and a musician. Everyone who is caught doing something illegal and bad has done a good act at some point. No one is completely all good or all bad.
