Hollywood Jim on Sedona Film Festival’s “The Song Within”

SedonaEye.com contributing writer, Hollywood Jim, and fan

Sedona is a place where many come to visit and soon appreciate how lucky others are to live here. Of importance to those of us who passed through and returned to make Sedona our home is that we heard and answered Sedona’s “call”.

Of the many good and great films, writers, producers and actors at the Sedona International Film 2011 Festival, I enjoyed meeting Kathy Douglas, writer/director of “The Song Within” film. After arriving at Kathy’s upper Sedona home with its awesome window views as a backdrop, we engaged in a short meet and greet. While Sedona red rock views are always impressive, a woman holding her own professionally and personally can be just as impressive.

Kathy’s film, a year in the making, was scheduled for a Monday-only premiere but after 500 people arrived to fill the seats, the Sedona International Film Festival staff scheduled a second screening within a few days at the Red Rock High School Performing Arts Center. A good thing because “The Song Within” finally found a slot on my busy Sedona Film Festival review schedule, and I’m glad that it did!

“The Song Within” is a film profiling sixteen women who make Sedona home. As each dynamic woman shares a personal story, of land and of being, a thread from each weaves a lovely cinematic tapestry as Douglas’ film crew manages to capture the artist, spiritualist, the individualism that is the core of sixteen Sedonans who arrived and stayed as if “called” to a quest. As the seventeenth journey of self-expression, Kathy Douglas’s film is a tribute to fulfilling her own “call” after arriving in Sedona.

“The Song Within” women’s stories of self-discovery, found passion, and embraced lives are symbolic of many women who yearn for more and settle for not less. As I left our meet and greet, Kathy Douglas handed me a “calling card” with a quote attributed to Ranjita: “Every person they know what fulfills them, they know what enriches them, and we need to give ourselves permission to do those things.”

So here’s a Shout Out to the Wise Woman Circles Film production team and to Kathy Douglas – congratulations on being selected for the 2011 Sedona International Film Festival. You gave yourselves permission to do and you did.
