Sedona AZ (November 25, 2012) –Folksville USA Point Man Gary Chamberlain, picked up trash on Arizona Highway 89A over Thanksgiving weekend. The clean up was much easier and safer, he noted, because Flagstaff ADOT District mowed and cut brush for the Folksville USA November 19 litter clean up event.
Chamberlain was quick to point out, “Mike Gutzwiller of ADOT and his Highway Maintenance Department mowed, mowed, and mowed! If ADOT cuts back the remaining brush on the highway (between Cottonwood and Sedona on the west side of AZ Highway 89A) like it did on the east side, the roadway will be in good shape for the Folksville USA February 16, 2013 event. Great cooperative effort between the state and its highway clean up volunteers!”
The February 2013 litter clean-up will include 50 miles of highway on the Verde Valley side of Mingus Mountains and, as Chamberlain said while dragging a bag of trash to be recycled to his car, “Hopefully many more groups will clean-up along Arizona Highways 169, 69, 89 and 89A in Dewey, Prescott Valley, Prescott and Chino Valley. There’s a lot of trash to be bagged out here.”
Yavapai County is becoming the role model for how a properly managed Adopt-A-Highway effort works when commitments to the taxpayer funded Adopt-A-Highway Program are honored.
Chamberlain pointed to a pile of asphalt and concrete, located at MP-356 on Highway 89A that he stacked out of the way of ADOT mowers, now waiting for removal.
“I pulled it out of the bushes and off the roadside where it was dumped. ADOT requested that large items be moved out of the mow-strip so taxpayer-paid mowers would not be damaged. The contractor that dumped this asphalt and concrete should be ashamed, and at the very least, fined and fined big. It should also disqualify that company from any further business with the taxpayers,” he said disgustedly.
Chamberlain took time to appreciate the work of the Flagstaff Highway Maintenance Department employee who mowed the section of roadside he was cleaning. “Whomever he or she was, it’s a great job! The previous ADOT Highway Maintenance Department employee would mow over everything in the mowers path, no matter what it was! That was no way to treat our taxpayer equipment, already in short supply, and it showed a disdain for the work. This time, the employee who mowed should be commended for this effort. It’s important to recognize good work ethics and values, and wise use of taxpayers hard earned dollars.”
