Dutch School Boy’s Life During Nazi Occupation

Yavapai College’s Osher Lifelong Learning Institute (OLLI)  of Sedona and the Verde Valley is offering a special free presentation on Friday, April 22 2011, “A School Boy’s Life During WWII in occupied Holland.” The Nazi occupation of The Netherlands usually brings to mind the story of Anne Frank, but hers is not the only one. Cottonwood resident Aart De Jong will present his story. Aart, who was 10 years old in May 1940, when the Germans invaded the Netherlands will present his reminiscences of the five years of Nazi occupation.

His story is a reminder of what people in Europe endured under German occupation. Come and hear Aart’s story of personal challenges of deprivation, sacrifice, and death during a time that was both exciting and dangerous, but never dull for a schoolboy. This presentation will be held 1:30-3:00 in Building I, Room 122 at the Yavapai College campus in Clarkdale at 601 Black Hills Drive. For more information, contact Natalia McKendrey, Olli Director, 928-649-4275 or 928-649-5550.

OLLI is a dynamic organization within Yavapai College created to meet the needs of intellectually active mature adults. What makes OLLI a unique learning experience is that there is no pressure of tests, grades, or papers. It is a warm gathering of people who are endlessly curious and love to learn. Attention teachers and administrators: valuable lesson and learning tool in our own backyard that should be taught in all our local schools; hope someone invites him to speak soon.
