Yavapai County Computer Network Hit by Qakbot

Cottonwood AZ (April 21, 2011) – The following is a public service information message issued by Julie Ayers, Yavapai County Administrator for immediate release:

Yavapai County’s computer network was hit early Tuesday morning, April 19, 2011, by a virus called “Qakbot” which has proven to be difficult to remove. As a result, County business has been seriously impacted and at this time we do not have an estimate of when the situation will be resolved.

The Superior Court, Clerk of Court and Juvenile Probation departments have not been impacted. For more information, contact me at 928-442-5980.”

UPDATE TO STORY April 25, 2011 in an exclusive SedonaEye.com staff follow-up interview:

“The Qakbot issue is largely resolved,” said Michael Holmes, the Management Information Systems Director for Yavapai County.

Interviewed by SedonaEye.com on Monday, April 25 2011, Holmes credits a competent and professional information systems staff for the quick response to the virus issue.

Holmes also credits the Yavapai County departments with contingency plans that were implemented to continue business.

“The County was current with anti-virus software but the software running was unable to capture and isolate the Qakbot virus,” continued Holmes. “A small quantity of machines are still being serviced and it is anticipated that all machines will be completely serviced by early this week. Services are back up and running and the County is being served accordingly.”
