Three teens in car that plunged over cliff

Yavapai County Sheriff's Office Area Commands MapSedona AZ (April 2, 2015)This is a preliminary report based on information provided early this morning from Yavapai County Sheriff’s Office deputies on the scene:

At approximately 5:30 p.m. yesterday, YCSO deputies responded to an accident involving a car that went over a Fossil Creek Road cliff, near the Childs Power Plant intersection on the outskirts of Strawberry, Arizona. The area borders two counties.

The single vehicle accident scene was nearly 15 miles from Arizona State Highway 260. Three teenaged female occupants were inside the four door sedan; two, including the driver, are 16 years of age and one is seventeen.

Deputies indicated the trio was on their way home after a day of outdoor activities when the driver took a turn too fast and lost control. The vehicle plunged over the edge and fell more than 100’ before coming to rest upside down on top of its ejected driver. The girl remained trapped under the vehicle for more than four hours, but was removed with what appeared to be minor injuries. Despite being trapped, she was conscious and alert during the rescue extraction. A deputy noted that there was a depression in the roof of the vehicle which created a cavity between the roof and the ground. It appeared her body occupied part of this space thus avoiding the full weight of the car.

Just after 9:00 p.m., the rescued driver was on her way to the Flagstaff Medical Center by helicopter for treatment of apparent non-life threatening injuries.

The two other girls had been removed from the vehicle earlier; one was flown to Flagstaff Medical Center and the other taken by ground ambulance to the Verde Valley Medical Center, Cottonwood.

There were no signs of drug or alcohol use during the initial investigation. Occupants seat belt use or non-use has yet to be reported.

Despite the initial uncertainty of jurisdictional boundaries, it should be noted that Gila County SAR, Gila County Sheriff’s Office, along with multiple fire fighters from Strawberry, worked together with YCSO exhibiting great teamwork. The YCSO commends all assisting agencies.

The accident investigation is ongoing. All three teens are from Flagstaff, Arizona. Attempts to obtain scene photos for publication were unsuccessful due to darkness.

Citizens can contact the Yavapai County Sheriff’s Office with information or questions at 928-771-3260 or the YCSO website.
