Three Flagstaff Hikers Hit by Lightning

Coconino County Sheriff BadgeSedona AZ (July 20, 2016) – A 911 call to the Coconino County Sheriff’s Office dispatcher from hikers near the summit of Humphreys Peak at 12:50 p.m. reported that they had been struck by lightning. At least one hiker was reported to be unresponsive. Due to severe and continuous lightning on the San Francisco Peaks, emergency responders are staged at Agassiz Lodge and coordinating with the hikers to get them to safety.

July 22, 2016 Update: A 911 call was received July 20, 2016. Cell service from the San Francisco Peaks can be hit and miss. The call connection was lost and the dispatcher called back. The call connection was also lost at the end of the recording, and the dispatcher and reporting party exchanged several phone calls afterward. The rest of the phone conversation is not currently available; the 911 center is having difficulties with the program that makes recordings.

July 21, 2016 Update: Coconino County Sheriff’s Office advised this morning that yesterday around dusk, an Arizona DPS Air Rescue Helicopter pilot out of Kingman, Arizona, a CCSO deputy and a CCSO Search and Rescue member recovered the body of the 17-year old victim of that day’s lightning strike near the summit of Humphreys Peak. No further details have been released at this time.

The rest of the phone conversation is not currently available; the 911 center is having difficulties with the program that makes recordings.ed previously, the two other young men who were hiking with Wade, and who received injuries are ages 17 and 18.  CCSO will not release the name of the 17-year-old since he is still considered a juvenile. The 18-year-old is David Lyons, also from Tempe.

Thank you for your patience and understanding while CCSO delayed releasing the identities of the deceased and injured teens. The Young family needed the time to notify other family members.
