The Last Jews in Iraq

jewish community sedona verde valleySedona AZ (June 20, 2014) – On Sunday, June 29, 2014, at 2:00 in the afternoon, the Cultural Committee of the Jewish Community of Sedona and the Verde Valley will sponsor a documentary on “The Last Jews in Iraq” with historical footage about the 2500 years of Jewish culture in Iraq. Dating from the destruction of the First Temple in Jerusalem in 586 B.C.E. and edited with touching personal stories, the documentary illustrates the extremely difficult mass emigration to Israel in 1951.

Following the film, Itzhak Magal, husband of JCSVV Rabbi Alicia Magal, will speak about his own experiences as a seven year old boy living through that airlifted transport of over 100,00 Iraqi Jews, difficult life in a makeshift tent-camp, and acculturation into Israeli society.

There is no charge for the film which will be screened at the JCSVV, 100 Meadowlark Drive, Sedona, south of the Chapel Road roundabout on AZ SR 179.

The Jewish Community of Sedona and the Verde Valley is a welcoming, egalitarian, inclusive congregation which provides religious, educational, social, and cultural experiences to members and visitors. The public is welcome.
