Supreme Court Same Sex Marriage Ruling

Sedona AZ (June 27, 2015) – Representative Bob Thorpe, AZ LD 6, is today releasing the following statement:

“I was surprised by yesterday’s ruling by the U.S. Supreme Court on same-sex marriage. The argument has been made that the 14th amendment, which was ratified in 1868, is part of the basis for the ruling. However, the court has certainly not felt the urgency to address same-sex marriage during the past 147 years. Neither the issue of opposite-sex marriage or same-sex marriage appears anywhere within the U.S. Constitution, and policies on marriage have traditionally been set by the individual states and by their citizens.

It amazes me that a simple majority, five out of the nine unelected Supreme Court justices, can invalidate the Constitutional marriage laws and amendments passed by numerous sovereign states and millions of U.S. citizens across the nation, including 1.2 million Arizonans who passed our state Constitutional marriage amendment in 2008. Just like the 1973 Roe v. Wade abortion ruling, an issue that is still hotly contested to this very day 42 years later, the Supreme Court’s ruling on same-sex marriage is not the end of this debate.

Many Northern Arizona citizens, who I represent in LD-6, agree with Hillary and President Clinton’s opinion when they were in the White House, and with President Obama’s opinion throughout the majority of his presidency, that marriage should be between one man and one woman.

  1. Matt says:

This is a civil rights issue resolved! Gay marriage issues of the early 2000’s will be compared to the race issues of the 1950’s and 60’s in the next few decades. Why does anyone not impacted by the gay marriage issue care about it anyhow? Do you really think you’re that important?

  2. The LGBT community played into the Democrat party hands once again. You are now subjects to the government. Your relationships are now subject to government oversight.

    Feel better?

Welcome to the world of litigation and paying through the nose. Start saving for those lawsuits and legal payouts when you get divorced or give your partner herpes. Giving up your freedom to be single in a relationship was stupid.

  3. Matt, I’m confused. I believe you have the inflated ego. Whose fantasy is that? You must be over 60 and gay and a psychiatrist’s couch surfer. Your exaggerated ego doesn’t equate with racism. You never picked cotton except out of a prescription bottle.

Why is gay marriage more important than the lives of gays being murdered overseas to you? Who cares if you get married because less than 50% of Americans do? You want. To be important in the LGBT world you need to be vocal for gays around the world being murdered and tortured.
