Seligman Cowboys Help Solve Thefts

Sedona AZ (May 13, 2013) – On May 10, 2013, Yavapai County Sheriff’s Office deputies were contacted by a rancher in the Bridge Canyon Estates area of Seligman, Arizona, regarding a theft. Several of the ranch cowboys had reported an apparent theft of conduit wire from a well site by a man last seen heading towards a trailer known for suspicious activity.

As deputies began to investigate, they received a call from another rancher reporting the theft of a 2009 model utility trailer the previous day.

Deputies went to the trailer identified by the cowboys and found 28-year-old Jason Heinze. Heinze matched the suspect description provided earlier by the cowboys, and he was detained by deputies. During an inspection of the trailer premises, YCSO deputies found a large junction box and other valuable electrical items that had been stolen from the ranch’s remote well site.

Further searching by deputies discovered the stolen 2009 utility trailer hidden in a makeshift three-walled shelter. Deputies contacted the utility trailer’s owner and he provided further information that two saddles, tack, shoeing supplies, ammunition reloading equipment, a chainsaw, tools, and an antique handmade quilt had all been stored in the trailer at the time of its theft, the quilt being an especially important heirloom to its owner.

Deputies resumed the search and found the items stashed in various areas around the suspect’s property, including the quilt. The total value of the recovered property exceeded $10,000, and the utility trailer owner was extremely appreciative of the deputies efforts that recovered the family heirloom quilt.

Both ranchers recovered all stolen property, thanks to the cowboys.

During the investigation, 28-year-old Ryan Garcia arrived by car and was detained. Deputies discovered additional stolen property inside his room and believe he was connected to the thefts.

Heinze and Garcia were booked at the Camp Verde Detention Center. Garcia was charged with Theft-Control of Stolen Property and remains in-custody on a $4,000 bond. Heinze was charged with three counts of Felony Theft and remains in-custody on a $10,000 bond.
