Sedona Seeking Sustainability Commission Volunteers

Sedona AZ–The City of Sedona is seeking volunteers to serve on a newly established Sustainability Commission. The formation of this new commission emphasizes the City’s commitment to sustainability.  The commission will consist of seven members appointed by the City Council.  The commission serves in an advisory capacity to the Council and plays a key role in providing comments and recommendations on sustainable goals, policies and programs.


At least five members of the commission must be Sedona residents and up to two may be non-residents with substantial ties within the Sedona city limits, such as owning property, a business or working within the city limits.  Initially, three members will serve 3-year terms, two members shall serve 2-year terms and two members shall serve 1-year terms.  Meetings will typically be held on the fourth Wednesday of each month at 10:00 a.m.


The commission is charged with the following roles and responsibilities:


a.                   Develop and implement outreach and education programs that inform, engage, and promote sustainable practices.

b.                  Review and propose sustainability related policies. Evaluate and make recommendations to Council regarding existing and potential new regulations, incentive programs and policy documents to further the goal of sustainability.

c.                   Advise on policy matters related to sustainable practices including:

·        Energy  (demand, supply)

·        Air (quality)

·        Water (consumption, supply, quality, wastewater, grey water, water policy, education)

·        Waste (composting, reuse, recycle)

·        Green Infrastructure (parks, open space, agriculture/food supply)

·        Built Environment (green zoning and building codes, building design)

·        Transportation (transit, bike, pedestrian, vehicle)

·        Businesses that produce sustainable products and services; eco-tourism

·        Other related issues that directly affect sustainability efforts considered by Council.


d.     Advise Council on possible partnerships to implement citywide and regional sustainability programs.


Applications are available at the City Clerk’s Office, 102 Roadrunner Drive, Sedona City Hall.
