Sedona Police Department Receives Various Grants

The Sedona Police Department has been successful in obtaining several grants in
excess of sixty-one thousand dollars from the Arizona Governor’s Office of
Highway Safety (GOHS) in 2010 to enhance the quality of life in the City of
Sedona through public safety.

The monies from these grants will help fund not only the Sedona Traffic
Enforcement Program (S.T.E.P.) but regular patrol duties as well. One of the
goals of the Sedona Police Department is to improve safety by reducing traffic
collisions and DUI occurrences in the city and these grants help alleviate
financial burdens to the City of Sedona. The following listing is a summary of
the grants we received.

Grant #2010-PT-018 specifics: Selective Traffic Enforcement Program, DUI
enforcement. $11,624.00 for personnel services including overtime and employee
related expenses. Monies awarded will be used to perform impaired driver
detection patrol in the Sedona City limits, and with other surrounding law
enforcement agencies as opportunities become available. Details will be held
each month in accordance with grant requirements, and will coordinate with local
events as needed. Officer participating will have a no tolerance policy for
impaired drivers. All drivers arrested will be transported to jail following
processing at the station.

Grant #2010-PT-025 specifics: Selective traffic enforcement program, equipment
purchase. $25,000 awarded for the purchase of 1 fully equipped Honda ST1300
police motorcycle for enhanced selective traffic enforcement. Monies awarded
will be used to purchase motorcycle including speed detection equipment, radio,
light package, and helmet with headset. Officers assigned to the motorcycle will
be involved in all aspects of the Sedona Police Department’s traffic program
including enforcement, education, DUI detection, and crash investigation.
Motorcycle officers can be more effective due to increased mobility, and
advanced training.

Grant #2010-AL-002 specifics: Impaired driver enforcement program, equipment
purchase. $12,549.83 awarded for the purchase of alcohol detection tools. Monies
awarded will be used to purchase thirty-one (31) Lifeloc Technologies portable
breath testers (PBT’s) plus supply of tubes used to capture breath sample. The
PBT’s currently in use are aging, and replacement/repair costs are not
economical. Each sworn officer would be issued a PBT, and the manufacturer will
provide training in its use. PBT use in the field assists officers with impaired
driver detection, as well as rules alcohol out as an impairment factor.
Grant #2010-PT-002 specifics: Impaired driver enforcement program, equipment
purchase. $11,885.51 awarded for equipment purchase for traffic related
products. Monies awarded will be used for the following: L.I.D.A.R (laser speed
detection) instrument, radar unit and installation for police motorcycle, two
(2) police motorcycle helmets with headsets, One (1) police motorcycle radio
plus installation, and two (2) handheld radar units with battery packs.
Equipment will assist officers in all aspects of traffic enforcement.

Grant #2010-HVE-001 specifics: 410 impaired driver incentive grant. Federal 410
funds will support personnel services including overtime for high visibility
impaired driving enforcement programs. $2906 awarded.
