James Capobianco Jr. of Sedona Arizona arrested on multiple charges

Sedona AZ (February 6, 2014) – A Sedona man, James Capobianco Jr., 46, was arrested by Coconino County Sheriff’s deputies for automobile theft, possession of drugs and paraphernalia, fleeing law enforcement while recklessly driving on a suspended license, and a DUI.

On February 4, 2014, at 7:06 p.m., the CCSO received the report of the theft of a 1969 Chevrolet pickup truck bearing an Arizona license plate from the owner’s residence off of State Route Highway 89A in Oak Creek Canyon. A deputy spotted the vehicle and followed it northbound on 89A, soon to be joined by a second deputy and an Arizona Department of Public Safety Officer.

As the suspect vehicle passed the Mountain Dell subdivision entrance, a deputy clocked its speed at approximately seventy miles per hour. Deputies engaged vehicle emergency lights and sirens but the suspect failed to yield and accelerated into a right turn on Lake Mary Road. The vehicle then turned onto West High County Road, squealing its tires as it negotiated the turn, and continued at a high rate of speed, almost rear-ending vehicles while passing dangerously. At this point and in the interest of public safety, the on-duty CCSO supervisor advised deputies to terminate the pursuit. Immediately afterward through the trees, a deputy saw the fleeing vehicle stop approximately fifty yards ahead of the location where the deputies had called off the pursuit.

As deputies approached the vehicle, they saw the DPS Officer chasing the suspect vehicle driver on foot and joined in the foot chase. A deputy brought the suspect down and, after initially resisting arrest, he was taken into custody without injury to himself or the arresting deputies.

During the follow-up investigation, CCSO ascertained that, approximately four months prior to this incident, a relative of James Capobianco Jr. sold her vehicle to the Oak Creek Canyon victim. Capobianco allegedly retained a spare set of keys that were used to steal the vehicle.
