Lauren Browne joins City of Sedona staff

Sedona AZ (October 3, 2013) – The City of Sedona welcomes Lauren Browne as its newly hired Citizens Engagement Coordinator. Last June, the Sedona City Council approved the CEC position in order to help communicate with citizens, organize the volunteer program, and be a conduit for public comments and ideas.

Originally from the midwest, Ms. Browne moved to Arizona in 2003 to attend Northern Arizona University. She graduated from NAU with a BA in English and a Minor in Journalism. Shortly thereafter and two years ago, Lauren moved to Sedona after falling in love with the City’s beauty, culture and recreational opportunities.

Utilizing her writing and research skills, Lauren most recently worked as a communications specialist with a publishing company. When she’s not working, she enjoys the company of her husband and dog. She’s also an avid hiker, biker, trail runner, and enjoys anything outdoors.

Since moving to Sedona, Lauren has become increasingly invested in the community. She recently served as a commissioner on the Parks and Recreation Commission and served as the Secretary for the northern branch of the Arizona Chapter of the U.S. Green Building Council.

Lauren is enthusiastic about her new position and is looking forward to meeting community members, assisting with a broad range of outreach, and focusing on an expansive citizen engagement program.

  1. Starting October 4, 2013, the photography of Grazina Wade will be exhibited at Sedona City Hall. Grazina’s varied photographs capture the beauty of the southwest throughout Arizona and Utah. Images include the Grand Canyon, Sedona, Bryce Canyon, Canyon de Chelly, as well as Hawaii, England, and Lithuania.

Grazina was born and raised in Boston and later lived in Germany and New York. Her interest in photography started at an early age and she later enrolled into Tufts/Museum School. After being inspired by the works of Ansel Adams, Edward Weston, Steiglitz and Paul Strand, and Grazina pursued black and white photography of the New England landscape.

Years later while vacationing in Arizona, Grazina made her way to Canyon de Chelly, to see where Timothy O’Sullivan and Ansel Adams photographed the White House Ruins. Two weeks of exploring the desert, visiting Indian ruins, and experiencing the vastness changed her life. It was then that Grazina fell in love with the southwest. Several months later she moved to Sedona and has since spent her time photographing a surreal world that makes up the stark and colorful magnificence of our city.

Her work has been in gallery exhibitions in Boston, Connecticut, New York, Chicago, Sedona, and Lithuania. It is also in the collections of the Duxbury Art Complex Museum in Massachusetts, the Museum of Northern Arizona, and Vilnius University in Lithuania as well as some private Arizona collections.

The public is welcome to view this beautiful exhibit during regular City Hall hours from October 4 through December 30, 2013. For more information or to schedule an exclusive viewing, contact the Arts & Culture Division at 928-203-5078 or ArtsandCulture@SedonaAZ.gov.

  2. Your tax dollars at work.

This is incredible, stunning. The City can’t fix basic infrastructure but can hire someone for “outreach” and “engagement”. I do not want to be “reached”, and the engagement is off. City of Sedona, we aren’t getting married.

  4. John Nolan says:

The two of you guys wouldn’t be happy even if the City of Sedona PAID YOU for the privilege to live here.

It was so obvious that the commissions weren’t working so the city is looking outside the box to try something new and innovative. Give it a rest and give them a chance for God’s sake.

  5. Warren says:

@ John Nolan – You are confused.
    1) I would not accept payment.
    2) Living here is NOT a privilege.
    3) Most of the commissions should have been disbanded long ago. The issue was not whether they were “working” but whether they had relevance or were needed. Most were not needed nor did they have relevance.
    4) The City, by finding a “solution” that costs money is hardly “outside the box”, especially when there are more pressing needs for the money. On the contrary, the City remains boxed in by its spendthrift mentality.
    5) A “Citizens Engagement Coordinator” is neither “new” nor “innovative”. Yes, it is a new position at the City but the underlying theme as reflected in the position’s title and description is the same ol’/same ol’ one that residents need to be “educated” by the City.

  6. So, the City changed from having voluntary commissions overseen by a staff member, already on salary, to eliminating the commissions and then HIRING another staff person to serve as intermediary between residents and elected officials, having the effect of insulating councilors? AND it wants to raise bed taxes to DONATE to the Chamber that only represents 1/3 of the businesses in town? IMO we need transparency not more secrecy. This new “position” provides none of that. The decent residents of Sedona need to be participating more in their government. We cannot continue on this losing path and expect the city to be solvent.

Thank you “Smells like” I had to look up what Agenda 21 was. This is what I got.

Those who follow Glenn Beck might be aware that Tuesday marks the release of his latest book, “Agenda 21,” the suspenseful and perhaps sobering tale of a futuristic America in which a UN-led program spawned an authoritarian state where individuals are stripped of all personal rights and freedoms.
