Sedona AZ (August 28, 2014) –  The Sedona Heritage Museum will host another round of its popular local history tours in October. This tour will follow the Red Rock Loop road to visit its historic sites, homesteads, and buildings.

Long before anyone ever heard the name Sedona, the area around Cathedral Rock was called Red Rock. Tour guide Paul Thompson, grandson of Oak Creek Canyon’s J.J. Thompson, spent his earliest years growing up in Red Rock. Every year, Thompson leads tours as a way of sharing his family’s long Red Rock history and as a way to give back to the Museum for its preservation work.

This tour will visit the Chavez place, Dumas Ranch, Schuerman-Red Rock Cemetery, Schuerman family homestead house, the Armijo homestead house (on the National Register of Historic Places), ruins of the first school (1891), the site of an early Oak Creek vineyard, an irrigation flume made of barrels, and other interesting historical sites.

Tours are October 2, 3, and 4, 2014, from 9:00 a.m. until noon. Space is limited on the luxury coaches and tickets are $50 (Museum members) and $55 (non-members). The public may purchase tickets at the Museum or by calling 928-282-7038.

The Sedona Heritage Museum is located in the Jordan Historical Park, 735 Jordan Road, uptown Sedona. The Museum is housed in historic structures listed on the National Register of Historic Places.

Is Paul Thompson still around? If so, I’d like to try and get in touch. I’m Jeff Dumas, the great-grandson of DE Dumas. I have several DE Dumas diaries, including those from 1896 and 1899. They mention Jim Thompson and Indian Gardens extensively. The two of them traveled together to Jerome, Prescott and Flagstaff in those years — and would often “stop over” at each other’s places.
