Sedona Heritage Museum Debuts New Exhibit

Sedona Heritage Museum

Sedona Az–Occasionally, the Sedona Heritage Museum presents a special exhibit, in addition to the changing exhibits it launches three times per year.  “Hearts & Hankies” on display from February through April is such an exhibit.

Hearts and Hankies

This ‘mini’ special display is a collection of handkerchiefs and a heart shaped candy box from 1930 with fancy organza covering and ribbonwork.  The handkerchiefs show the diversity of hankies from the early 20th century, with elaborate hand crocheted 3-D flowers and a rare ‘Arizona’ hankie.  The collection comes from Elsie Smith and is loaned by her daughter Mary Wyatt, a pioneer member of the Museum.

In addition, Oak Creek Canyon Tours by Sedona Heritage Museum is back by popular demand. Tours of Oak Creek Canyon’s historic sites, produced by the Sedona Heritage Museum, are scheduled for April 28, 29 and 30. The tours will be narrated by Paul Thompson. Thompson is the grandson of pioneer homesteader J. J. Thompson, the Sedona area’s first white settler who came here in 1876, and son of Albert Thompson who wrote many of the stories in the book, “Those Early Days”.

A comfortable 14-passenger luxury coach will stop at historic places from Uptown Sedona to upper Oak Creek Canyon and back. In all, Thompson will explain 20-some homesteads, squatters’ sites, campgrounds and other historic locations including Cave Springs and Thompson’s springhouse, with a special visit to the historic Purtymun Cabin.

Each tour will depart at 9:00 a.m. and return at approximately noon. Tickets are $50 for Sedona Historical Society members and $55 for non-members. Space is limited and one tour is already sold out. Reservations may be made by calling the Museum at 928-282-7038.

The Sedona Heritage Museum is located at 735 Jordan Road in Jordan Historical Park in Uptown Sedona and is open daily from 11:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m.  For more information, call 928-282-7038.
