Sedona Free RoadRunner Trolley Service to end

Sedona AZ–At the Wednesday, September 15, 2010 Council meeting, the City Council re-affirmed their position that the RoadRunner transit service in the Main Street Business District will terminate no later than June 30, 2011.  Currently, the service operates in the Uptown area from the municipal parking lot on Schnebly Lane and to Tlaquepaque and Hillside Shops.

In July 2010, City Council formed a Transit Task Force and was directed by Council to complete their report by January 15, 2011 with quantitative information to demonstrate the need for a public transit system in the business district and for the group to explore new options for transit that will serve and be supported by a broad segment of the Sedona Community and that are significantly self-sustaining.

What would be beneficial is a service that residents could also use – for example, when leaving one’s car at the shop. The present RR serves only a portion of the retail district, ignoring West Sedona. And it doesn’t even provide benches for waiting in front of Tlaquepaque.

So many decisions about the current vehicles, marketing, etc. were wrong from the start.

I hope the committee researching what might make a good substitute, if any, has a lot more common sense and does a great deal more looking into solutions other communities have used than did the people who chose the most-expensive both to purchase and to maintain option available.

The service has been a drain for years. NO one rides it enough to justify the expense. Why wait nearly one year to terminate a service that is nothing but a drain on the city budget? The city council is filled with members that do not understand basic Econ 101.

Is this any different than beating on a dead horse? Apparently not when one takes into consideration that between the Chamber of Commerce and the Main Street (whatever it’s called) received slightly short of one million dollars from the city. For what? It isn’t as if Sedona hadn’t been “discovered” long before there was a Chamber of Commerce let alone the uptown businesses that assisted in running up the bill for the “new design” of the formerly owned State Highway. What next? Will it be the formal organizing of the merchants in West Sedona demanding equal consideration?

    Additional information from the City:

Termination of the service and disposal of the busses could occur prior to June 30, 2011, depending on the findings of the Council-appointed Transit Task Force. Any decision regarding the disposal of the busses will be deferred until after the Committee finishes its report.
