Sedona AZ (April 4, 2013)SedonaEye.com readers can now stop sending letters and emails to the editor asking “When’s Harley McGuire back from his vacation?” His agent called with the news! He’s back!

Actually he jumped off his living room couch but his is a dog’s life and this is Sedona!

Well, okay, yes, we did have to promise a daily supply of his favorite treats, hour long lunches in the park, midafternoon belly rubs, ear scratches at 3 PM, and a free subscription to SuperDogMatch.com.

What can we say! He’s famous!

So as fellow Irishman and favorite sidekick Ed McMahon liked to say, Here’sssss Harleyyyyy!

Hey Everybody!

Mojo Nikki and Fabian

Mojo Nikki and Fabian

It’s been a while since you’ve heard from me. Mom said to back off because maybe my messages were getting to be stale and boring. Well, she should speak for herself.

Actually, I haven’t had a whole lot to write about. It’s just been one of those quiet times when the wind, sneezing, dripping noses, and coughing never seem to stop (in humans, that is). A good thing is that it’s been cool enough for me to go in the car with Mom, and I love that!

Inoch sends me e-mails and neat stories and pictures, and Skipper comes to visit once in a while. Then, of course, we still go to the park and I get to see all my pals out there . . . too many to mention names. Wouldn’t want to leave any of them out!

My pal, Cody, has an adopted brother now. Casey I think is his name. Lucky for Cody!

Here’s a cute little story for you. Maybe some have seen it before, but it’s pretty much the truth.

“What is a cat?

Mojo Nikki Fabian 2Cats do what they want. They rarely listen to you. They’re totally unpredictable. When you want to play, they want to be alone. When you want to be alone, they want to play. They expect you to cater to their every whim. They’re moody. They leave hair everywhere. They drive you nuts and cost an arm and a leg.

Conclusion: They’re tiny women in little fur coats.

What is a dog?

Dogs lie around all day, sprawled on the most comfortable piece of furniture in the house. They can hear a package of food being opened half a block away but don’t hear you when you’re in the same room. They can look dumb and lovable at the same time. They growl when they are not happy. When you want to play, they want to play. When you want to be alone, they want to play. They will love you forever if you rub their tummies. They leave their toys everywhere.

Conclusion: They’re tiny men in little fur coats.”

Just the other day it came into my head that I never heard what happened to Fabian, the e-pal who had all those health problems and surgery and all. Well, my agent took care of it and we received the following message from Fabian’s mother.

Cody

Cody

“Harley, Fabian is doing pretty damn good for an “ole” doggie. Still has some issues (which he had before the broken leg) but other than walking a little funny, he is getting around. Walks damn slow, but then don’t we all as we age. Love to you from your dog pals, Fabian, Mojo & Nikki. Sendin’ you a couple of pix.” She also included the photos of Fabian and his brothers, Mojo and Nikki. Pretty cool, huh?

How about taking a page out of Fabian’s book and let me hear from you, too? It would be really cool!

Okay, my agent says I gotta go now. It’s time for my afternoon belly rub. After all, it IS a dog’s life!

hi im a cat lover via Twitter

  3. Fabian says:

Harley, read your article and Nikki, Mojo and I (Fabian) are thrilled that we are now famous, having appeared in the Sedona Eye. We’ve even had a few friends asking for our pawprints, which we will gladly give “free” of charge. As an update…along with my other issues, yesterday, they had to pull 5 of my teeth. It really sucks growing old, but my Mom keeps me hanging in there…but I wonder what she means when she says I’m a “million dollar mutt” ?????

    Love your articles,
    Fabian

  4. Martha says:

So glad you are back from your winter vacation. Now that there is a hint of Spring in the air you’ll be taking pen in paw more frequently. I loved reading about the difference in a dog and cat. Quite accurate I would imagine. Also enjoyed hearing about your four legged friends and seeing their pictures. Keep up the good work Harley McGuire.

  5. Cole says:

I’m having hip problems and in my 13th year. My family worries about me and loves me lots. Keep writing Harley.

  7. Dear Harley,

We are pleased to announce our new Executive Director of the Humane Society of Sedona, Suzanne Fuqua!

Suzanne has been with the Santa Fe Humane Society since early 2011 as the Director of Behavior and Training. She has trained staff and volunteers in dog behavior, helping animals become more adoptable. She has also collaborated with the New Mexico Penitentiary to set up a “Paws to Pen” initiative.

Suzanne holds a BS degree in Agricultural Economics with an Animal Science concentration from the University of Kentucky. She has a Certificate of Nonprofit Management from the University of New Mexico and is a Certified Professional Dog Trainer. Suzanne owns and operates Dog Training Solutions, LLC, that provides behavior consulting services to dog owners. Her business experience includes being the Business Manager of Southwestern College.

She has served as a member of the board and volunteer of the Santa Fe Animal Shelter, board member of the Northern New Mexico Animal Protection Society, and board member and officer of the Santa Fe Dog Obedience Club.

The Santa Fe Humane Society, although much larger than ours, has similar programs and philosophies. Santa Fe has a low-cost Spay/Neuter program, discount Adoption Fee events, Thrift Shops, a summer camp for kids, and more. They took in over 5,000 animals last year, as compared to our 1,000 pet intakes.

Suzanne expects to start in early May. All of us at the shelter are very excited about her arrival! Welcome Suzanne!

  8. Oh “Burp and Belcher” you crack me up! Tweet to you, too.

Hang in there Cole, my buddy. April 18th will be the 6th anniversary with my new Mommy Dearest and the folks that had me before thought I was probably 5 when I went to live with her. So, you see, Cole, I’m not far behind you in years. Look at it this way. We have homes where we are loved dearly and with age we are bound to have the problems that go with it.

Fabian, you little dickens! A million dollar mutt! Just keep on truckin’ with that toothless grin! But, did you know, that doggies have some 40 plus teeth? Oh happy day for that. Keeps me hopeful to continue to bite the groomer.
    (oops, erase, erase)

    Lovingly,
    Harley McGuire

  9. Hi Harley and pals,

Pets left outdoors on hot summer days can be in serious danger. Dogs should only be left outdoors for short periods, and be provided with sufficient water and a cool, sheltered place that provides shade from the sun. Because of a limited ability to sweat, even a short time in a hot environment can be life threatening.

Walking during the early morning or evening when it is cooler is advisable.

Parked cars can quickly reach deadly temperatures, even on relatively mild days with the car parked in the shade and the windows slightly open!

Please remember these summertime safety tips! We love to play and be taken care of by our families so please never leave us in a car. Leave us at home when you run your summer errands! We will try our best to not misbehave…PROMISE!

  10. Fabian says:

Harley, do you mean to tell me that I have 35 more teeth for my vet to pull????? Egads, my mom is not going to like that one bit. $$$$$$$$$$$$$$$ luv n’ stuff, Fabian

  11. April 18, 2007, is the day you arrived in Sedona, Arizona, after having had an unknown prior existence. You weighed only seven pounds but had lived through that horrible experience of being hit by a car.

Now, six years later, weighing in at more than you should (15 lbs?), you have beaten an even more challenging experience, that being a survival of living among the wildlife of Sedona which isn’t restricted to four-footed varieties.

Happy No. 6 Birthday of your life spent in Sedona. Only “The Shadow Knows” how many years you lived before relocating from Texas to Arizona.

    Blessings Little Buddy,

From One Who Knows. (and I “ain’t” The Shadow)
