Sedona Dedicates Kori and Rowe Roundabout Art

Sedona AZ (February 27, 2012) – The City of Sedona, the Art in Public Places Committee, the Arts and Culture Commission, and the City Council cordially invite you to attend a Dedication Ceremony for the newly installed roundabout sculptures of Kim Kori and Ken Rowe’s Above and Beyond. The ceremony will take place at the corner of the Y Roundabout and Brewer Road (old service station parking lot) on Friday, March 16, 2012 at 10:00 AM.

The Dedication Ceremony will include a formal ribbon cutting and speeches by the artists, members from the Art in Public Places Committee, Commissioners from the Art and Culture Commission, City Council and staff.

The installation of Kori and Rowe’s Above and Beyond has been highly anticipated since its inception in October 2010. Many hours of artistic endeavor, careful planning, engineering, construction, and meticulous placement led to the sculpture’s new and prestigious roundabout home.

Adding to the dedication’s excitement is that the artwork was designated as an official Arizona Centennial Project by the Arizona Historical Advisory Commission in celebration of Arizona’s one-hundredth birthday.

In addition to the dedication, on Saturday, March 17, from 3 PM until 5 PM, the Sedona Arts Center in uptown Sedona, will have a special presentation in its Theatre Studio featuring sculptors Rowe and Kori discussing the process of creating “Above and Beyond.” A reception will follow.

For more information regarding this ceremony, visit www.SedonaAZ.gov, Arts and Culture, Art in Public Places page. Participants are encouraged to RSVP by calling 928-203-5189 before March 9, 2012.

    Congratulations to Kori and Rowe!

But this is the dumbest idea I’ve ever heard of. Not only do the tourist have a problem with the round-abouts (I’ve nearly been hit a dozen times), now they have something else to divert their attention. Most tourist are too busy looking for how to get into the post office or Hyatt entrance (confusion vortex) to watch the traffic.

Chalk this up to another dumb idea and terrible waste of art. If Sedona would like to display art, why not put it in the parking lot of Basha’s or next to the Theater’s or in front of the new Film Fest office?

Well put it on the board with the closure of Rachel’s Knoll, the Red Rock Pass, the closure of the Cultural Park, the “improvements” of hwy 179, the uptown remodel, and the stupid lights going up along 89A. Sedona always sells out to the highest bidder and is the only city in the state that is keeping ADOT workers busy with ridiculous projects.

Amen, “Maj.” Well said! Guess I, too, was fooled. Thought folks came to Sedona to see the red rock scenery which is rapidly becoming less and less visible.
