Thanks again Brent. So far there has been no arrest; however, there was a group of people there who I am sure saw what happened; but none of them, as far as I know, are coming forward as witnesses.

It would seem there are people in our community more dedicated to casual and or fleeting friendships… even when their friends are a serious danger to the overall security of our community and the safety of each individual. Last I heard, from the detective working the case, the assault is now being investigated as a hate-crime.

I am appealing to the witnesses’ sense of justice: “with the type of behavior you witnessed going unhindered or unopposed, eventually, something like what happen to me could also happen to you; if you are willing to do the right thing – what’s an appropriate action for a humane/caring human being – please contact the Yavapai Sheriff’s department and tell them what you saw.”

  7. Sean, Gilbert AZ says:

watched program on AZ8 tonight about ole miss kids making a difference standing up to the kkk last year and how alumni and townspeople stood together to turn back the hate and how bloomington indiana came together for not in our town against anti-semitism & racial hate murder

pbs.org/niot is what sedona needs to start/ not in our town mr warren & if sedona is a spiritual place then not in your town

  8. Marvel Warren says:

Thanks Lisa! So far there still has been no arrest. I am becoming increasingly concerned. I recently heard about another bias motivated situation with a knife in a nearby town; I am now looking to confirm this word of mouth report. It is interesting to note how many of these types of crimes, and crimes just as or more violent and terrorizing… are not being reported.

Thanks Sean! There is a need for more acts and contributions to American solidarity such as “Not in our town” which grew from a PBS documentary into a national effort to connect people working together to take action against hate and create safe, inclusive communities. ” http://www.pbs.org/programs/not-in-our-town/

My current thoughts: It would seem, to me, it is time for all violent acts of hatred to be addressed, not only by locking up offenders, but also by exposing it at every point of attack against us. A Hate-Crime (a crime involving the total disrespect for the rights of others due to a bias) in this day and age calls for immediate action; turning a situation over to the authorities can be seen as turning the other cheek (for those in a habit of protecting others or mistaken self incrimination or made to think they have no rights) – the law is not a person in judgment, it is a simple unfeeling inanimate construct devised so we are able to turn the other cheek and recognize one’s ability/might to inspire the “wheels of societal justice” to work. …this is my avenue of pursuit in this matter. It is not my intention to return the hatred he demonstrated for people of my race, but to simply see to it that he is caught and that he goes to prison. As a Christian, I see this as a test of courage in faith and a test of humanness in the humanity around me.

  9. Marvel Warren says:

My apology, I meant to say “…a test of humaneness in the humanity around me.” Words (expressing only a fraction of a person’s intention) are at times so final, it is no wonder people are afraid to speak up – afraid of being misunderstood or pointed to as wrong or thought silly or stupid as to their point of view.

To Palolo & Gigi: It is not in my intention to stop people from enjoying the beauty and the healing journey (for some) Sedona has to offer. There are a great many people here willing to and working on getting past their bias of others: prejudice is also a sickness and like any addiction it comforts the suffering and misery of a life gone wrong. Many people here are working on getting passed whatever particular bias traps them – not as a demand to follow the law but by way of what there is to gain by way of personal growth. I am grateful for such people and the many people here who are by their nature racially non-bias. Not to discount, there is a huge following of people addicted to prejudice attitudes in this area…; I am only doing my small part in keeping my neighbors and visitors to the Sedona area safe – cover-ups and ignorance and non-reprisals in reference to crimes prompted by hatred has a deadly cost.

…this activity of violence due to race has always extended to all parts of American life; if allowed to continue and to rebuild, the atrocities of the past wait for us in our future; America will again become part of what we have recently lost so many lives over and spend so much time and money attempting to eliminate from the world.

what is the latest on this? nothing in the news lately? Paolo & GiGi, Glendale

  11. Hi Marvel, I sympathize with what happened to you in 2011 and I’m glad to see that justice was finally served to the perpetrator. I’m thinking about moving to Sedona and I’d like you opinion, do you feel that your assault was an isolated incident or is Spude’s racism typical in Sedona? I see from the article that Spude was not a resident of Sedona. Would you recommend that African Americans move to Sedona?
