Sedona AZ (September 22, 2014) The Sedona Historical Society will host its annual Pioneer and Community Picnic at Indian Gardens Park, also known as Bacon Rind Park, in Oak Creek Canyon, on Sunday, October 5, 2014, at noon. The picnic is open to the public.

This is a wonderful event to be enjoyed by anyone interested in meeting Sedona pioneer descendants and long-time residents. All those attending should arrive no later than 11:30 a.m. with a dish to share. Attendees, in addition to a dish to share, must bring their own plates and utensils.

A meat entree and beverages will be provided by the Sedona Heritage Museum. The potluck picnic lunch starts at noon.

The 2014 picnic theme will be a pioneer discussion that focuses on the history of Oak Creek families and their early 1920’s businesses, including the difficulties of the original overnight guided tours through Oak Creek Canyon to Sedona hosted by Flagstaff’s “Lightning Delivery.” The barely finished dirt road back then was so treacherous that the women would sometimes abandon the ‘delivery’ car to walk! The Schnebly Road connection and construction to Flagstaff will be included as a microphone is passed around to pioneers who will tell stories and share memories.

Other stories will cover how Bear Howard‘s cabin became the heart of the famous Mayhew’s Lodge which was a major tourist resort and attraction in the 1920’s and where Zane Grey and other ‘rich and famous’ celebrities, even a President of the United States, came to enjoy the seclusion of the Canyon.

Indian Gardens Park is at 3953 North Highway 89A in Oak Creek Canyon, across from Garland’s Indian Gardens Store. For more information, call 928-282-7038.

The Sedona Historical Society’s mission is to research, preserve and teach the history of the greater Sedona area. As part of that effort the Society operates the Sedona Heritage Museum at 735 Jordan Road, uptown Sedona. Please visit soon!
