Search and Rescue Answers 36 Calls in 23 Days

coconino county sheriff's office logoSedona AZ (September 24, 2015) – Coconino County Sheriff’s Deputies and its Search and Rescue unit responded to over 36 search and rescue calls in the first 23 days of September. The calls covered an area from southern Utah to the Mogollon Rim in Arizona.

Calls may require a search and rescue unit response or a Coconino County Sheriff’s Office patrol to locate lost or missing persons in an area. By state statute, the CCSO and its Search and Rescue Unit are responsible for all search and rescue events in the county, and that response regularly draws upon assistance from other agencies that willingly cooperate and share resources.

The September Search and Rescue events were kicked off with a busy Labor Day weekend during which time CCSO responded to over a dozen search and rescue calls. Most of the Labor Day weekend calls are recapped here with the addition of new information. Following the holiday weekend recap, there are summaries of search and rescue calls throughout September 2015:

  3. On Monday, September 28, 2015, at about 5:00 in the evening, the Coconino County Sheriff’s Office was contacted by a Kane County Utah Sheriff’s Deputy advising a personal locator beacon spot activation in Paria Canyon, approximately eight miles upstream from Lees Ferry. In speaking with family members of the hikers in possession of the device, investigators learned that the distress signal was a Level 2 which indicates the individuals initiating the signal are sick or injured and needing as soon as possible help.

Due to the late hour of the day, the impending darkness, and the rugged terrain, a ground response was not commenced. The Arizona Department of Public Safety Air Rescue Helicopter based in Flagstaff lifted off at 5:30 p.m. and, at 6:30 p.m., arrived at the distress location and began an air search.

Crew members spotted the hikers approximately one mile downstream from the initiation point. The pilot was able to safely land the helicopter and crew members made contact with the hikers. According to one of the individuals, he was changing the batteries in the spot locator and accidentally activated the Level 2 emergency signal. None of the party members required transport and the DPS helicopter returned to Flagstaff.

The day before, the Sheriff’s Office was made aware of a sick hiker in Paria Canyon, very close to where the prior described response occurred. The DPS helicopter based in Kingman responded, located the ill hiker, and landed. The individual was flown out of the canyon and subsequently refused any medical treatment.

The Coconino County Sheriff’s Office would like to thank the Arizona Department of Public Safety for the availability of air rescue helicopters and crews. This vital service is extensively utilized by the Sheriff’s Office throughout Coconino County on search and rescue assignments and a wide variety of other law enforcement related missions.
