Al Cornell

Sedona AZ (September 17, 2014)Now that fall is upon us, it is prime time for hiking, backpacking or simply enjoying Sedona’s forest resources. Essential and potentially life saving information about wilderness preparation will be presented on October 3, 2014, at a First Friday Talk sponsored by the Friends of the Forest and the USDA Forest Service Red Rock Ranger District.

Join Al Cornell as he discusses Wilderness Preparation: Exploring the Wilds with Safety and Skill. Cornell is a wilderness expert and long time volunteer with Search and Rescue services, as well as Friends of the Forest. He will present safe and smart techniques for wilderness recreation, including basic equipment, shelter, fire-making and other survival skills.

Cornell draws on a combination of modern and ancient skills, a history of military training in outdoor skills and studies of prehistoric cultures. His Survival and Wilderness Safety Programs have benefited local groups ranging from Boy Scout troops to the Verde Valley Search and Rescue unit. The presentation will highlight lessons learned from 20 years of rescues in the Sedona area and Cornell’s own extensive exploration of northern Arizona’s wildlands.

The free public talk begins at 11:00 in the morning at the Red Rock Ranger District Visitor Center, one mile south of the Village of Oak Creek on State Route 179, Sedona. For more information, contact the RRRD Visitor Center at 928-203-2900.
