Police Investigate APS Customer Fraud Attempts

scamSedona AZ (November 28, 2013) – During the past week, an unknown suspect contacted local businesses and advised them of an overdue APS payment. In three separate and similarly reported incidents, a suspect informed the business that unless immediate payment was provided, electric service would be disconnected. The businesses were instructed to pay the APS bill by going to a local store and obtaining a prepaid debit card for the amount due. The suspect then informed the businesses to call him back at a provided telephone number and give the debit card information. These incidents were schemes to fraudulently obtain money from the businesses.

Sedona Police investigators subsequently learned that APS has received numerous reports about similar fraud attempts from customers in its service areas.

APS does  not contact customers via phone or in person to request credit card or other banking information. In the event of delinquent balance or shut-off notice, APS uses the following means of communication:

• Customer Bill

• Text Message

• Automated Dialer Message

• Letter

• Door Hanger left at the Residence.

Although the Sedona incidents involve local businesses, all Sedona residents should be aware of these fraudulent attempts to collect money and take steps to not be victimized. Residents and local businesses are encouraged to immediately report any usual or suspicious activity of this nature to the Sedona Police Department at (928) 282-3100.

If unsure of the person or the service/information request, APS asks customers to question the validity of a person claiming to be an APS representative:  Ask for the employee’s identification number and call the APS Customer Care Center at (602) 371-7171 to verify that employee’s status.

Remember by working together, we can ensure a safer Sedona and community for all.
