Pilot Cites Wind Gust in AZ Plane Crash

Coconino County Patrol MapSedona AZ (October 5, 2015) – On Sunday, October 4, at 2:50 in the afternoon, the Coconino County Sheriff’s Office received a report of a plane crash near the Cliff Dwellers Airport in Marble Canyon, Arizona.

A resident in the Cliff Dwellers area reported hearing a plane engine then a loud thud. She looked towards the airport and saw dust. A 65 year old man and a 62 year old woman from North Vancouver, British Columbia had been attempting to land at the Cliff Dwellers Airport. During the landing strip approach, the pilot experienced a wind gust that caused the experimental Super Bushmaster LS180S aircraft to lose altitude; it came into contact with sandy terrain prior to reaching the runway.

The woman passenger was transported by ambulance to the Page (AZ) Hospital with minor injuries while the male pilot did not require medical assistance. The aircraft was extensively damaged.

The incident is currently under investigation by the Coconino County Sheriff’s Office, Federal Aviation Administration, and the National Transportation Safety Board.
